Help for Oldham residents who suddenly run into money problems and can’t afford basic needs, along with longer-term support to help them stay financially stable.

Crisis payments

For residents who suddenly have money problems (for example after a fire, flood, leaving domestic abuse, or sudden illness) and can’t afford basic needs without urgent help.

This scheme can help with essentials such as:

  • Food, through supermarket vouchers so you can choose where to shop and what to buy
  • Energy costs to help keep your home warm
  • Basic household items for cooking, washing, and somewhere safe to sleep

Crisis payments

Housing payments

Housing payments (previously called Discretionary Housing Payments) can help if you’re struggling to pay your rent or are at risk of becoming homeless.

You may be able to get this help if you receive Housing Benefit or Universal Credit and can’t afford the full cost of your rent.

Preventing holiday hunger

Supermarket vouchers for children who get free school meals.

Around 21,000 children in Oldham, from pre-school age to young people leaving college care, will receive supermarket vouchers during this school year:

  • £15 at May half-term
  • £50 over the summer holidays

You don’t need to apply. If your child is eligible, their school will send the vouchers automatically.

Rent Deposits & Tenancy Bonds

Payments are available for residents working with the Housing Options team.

If you might need temporary accommodation, you may be able to get help with a rent deposit or tenancy bond.

To get this support, contact your housing officer.

Oldham Foodbank

Free food parcels are available for anyone who needs them.

Extra funding means the foodbank can provide essential supplies all year round.

To get a food parcel, you’ll need a referral. Call the Oldham Council Helpline on 0161 770 7007, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Community Groups

Local voluntary, community, faith, and social enterprise organisations coordinated through Action Together can help with applications for Crisis Support.

Support will be available from Summer 2026.
