Inexperienced walkers might find this long and muddy route difficult due to the boggy terrain and scarce signage but those who have persevered will eventually be greeted by beautiful countryside and Hartshead Pike in the distance.

It’s a fairly strenuous walk to the monument but the rewards are numerous - with views of Manchester, Oldham, and even as far as Jodrell Bank and the Cheshire plains on a good day.

A map is recommended for the final stretch along the Tameside-Oldham boundary, which features the remains of old brickworks, rolling fields and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal towpath.

A final push up a steep hill to Fern Lea eventually leads to lanes that weave back to Dove Stone Reservoir.
