2. Diggle to Denshaw

  • Length: 5.3 miles
  • Difficulty: Hard in parts
  • Is it suitable for young children: No
  • Dog friendly: Yes
  • Facilities: On-road car parking near Diggle Hotel and free parking area by canal near Station Rd. No toilets.

This rural path leads you over a tunnel through the hillside and via a canal before pitching upwards to Brun Clough to join the Pennine Way.

Exposed and rocky, this trail on the edge of the moors offers sweeping views over Delph and intersects with the Oldham Way, which eventually wraps around Castleshaw Reservoir and the remains of a Roman fort below.

From there, follow signs for Denshaw or turn it into a longer circuit by cutting through the reservoirs and joining trails off Huddersfield Road back to Diggle.
