The best route for rookie ramblers, this four-mile walk along a flat towpath takes the Oldham Way south - down the Rochdale Canal into Failsworth and ending at Brookdale Park on the outskirts of Manchester.

It mixes urban living, industrial heritage and natural greenery, ducking over and under the M60 before rejoining the waterway with its tunnels and locks.

With its easy terrain, this is a good choice for families.
