Description

Oldham College is a friendly and an inclusive college that prides itself on having comprehensive arrangements in place to support all our students to reach their potential; aspirations for students with SEND are high.

Our aim is to treat every student as an individual and support them to develop their social and independence skills, along with academic achievements on their preferred course. Our staff work collaboratively with students, parents, carers and other agencies to ensure any barriers to learning are alleviated.

Our students thrive in an environment where ‘every Teacher is a Teacher of SEND’ and all staff within the College understand their responsibility in supporting students with additional needs.


At Oldham College, we firmly believe that every student matters and all our students are entitled to a high quality experience whilst at College.

Our Additional Learning Support Department (ALS) is dedicated to providing the support necessary to enable our students to realise their learning ambitions.

All applicants to the College can make a declaration of need on application or at interview and the ALS Department will arrange to carry out an assessment which could include transition arrangements and visits to the college.

Students may disclose a need at enrolment or anytime whilst on course. For students with a significant level of need, funding must be agreed and put in place by the relevant local authority.

We have an extensive work based learning portfolio, and many of our students choose to access or progress onto a range of vocational settings in our supported internships, traineeships or apprenticeships.


Our Additional Learning Support Department has a range of professional staff who are trained and experienced in supporting people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities, as well as working with other professionals to provide the most effective support.

We will support students who have:
• ADD or ADHD
• Autism or Asperger’s Syndrome
• Dyslexia, Dyspraxia or Dyscalculia
• Difficulties with Maths & English
• Emotional, Behavioural and Social difficulties
• A Hearing Impairment
• Language support for non-native English speakers
• Learning difficulties
• Mental health difficulties
• Mobility difficulties
• Personal care needs
• Physical disabilities
• Study Skills support
• A Visual Impairment

Types of support which will be offered are as follows:

• Support in class Specialist 1:1 additional support sessions
• Small group workshops
• Support during lunch and break times
• Personal Care needs
• Adaptation/modification of learning materials into an accessible format such as Braille or Large Print
• British Sign Language (BSL) Communication Support Workers
• Sighted Guiding
• Loan of Laptops, Dictaphones, Magnifiers and other assistive technology
• Mobility support
• Exam Access Arrangements
