Many children in mainstream schools will need extra help with learning at some point, such as struggling with certain subjects from time to time.
All mainstream schools must support children with special educational needs who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). They do this by adapting their teaching methods, materials, and environment to meet the needs of pupils with different abilities and interests.
Each school has:
- A written policy on how they support pupils with SEN.
- A staff member (with titles like SEN Co-ordinator, Inclusion Manager, or Learning Support Manager) who is in charge of organising this support.
You can ask individual schools for more details about how they identify and support pupils with special needs.
Children with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
Some children have more serious and long-term needs that require help from multiple professionals and extra support beyond what a school can usually provide.
These children may have an EHCP after being assessed. Most pupils with an EHCP go to mainstream schools, but a few attend a resourced school (with extra specialist support) or a special school.
If your child has an EHCP, you should still apply for a maintained (state) school by the relevant deadline:
This helps make sure a school place is offered, even if other options are being considered during the EHCP Annual Review.
Hollinwood Academy
Hollinwood Academy offers both primary and secondary education in one school. If you are not applying for a Reception place, you must contact the school directly to ask about applying for a place during the school year (in-year transfer).
