How do you identify special educational needs and disabilities?

We do this using the following methods: • Focused observations for each child • Additional (and different to) planning • Quality first teaching • Assess-plan-do-review (Graduated approach) • SMART (Specific, Measurable, Agreed, Realistic and time bound) targets • Various tools – ASQ, ELKLAN, WELCOMM, 2 year old check

How do you involve parents/carers?

Discussions with parents/carer's on a regular basis. Involve parents/carer's in any action we are going to take e.g. speaking with health visitors, Speech and language etc. Stay and play sessions are offered, where parents/carer's can come and join in with their child's play gaining an insight into their learning and development. Quarterly Parents Forum Evenings where we aim to share information and ideas that could help with a variety of issues you may encounter at home. We involve parents/ carers in Person Centred reviews, targets being set etc.

How do you support a child’s learning and development?

There is a named SENCO within the setting. Regular discussions and updates will take place with SENCO, key worker and other members of staff Person Centred review meetings which will involve parents/ carer's and all practitioner's working with your family. Liaise with professionals on your behalf and organize visits within nursery if needed. Provide information for support groups e.g. Speech and language drop in sessions, SEN Policy and other agencies. Provision mapping is used to plan for each child around their needs. Parents can access their child's online learning journal for regular information, observations and development reports regarding your child's learning.

How do you meet a child’s educational needs?

Through regular observations of each child Assess-plan-do-review (Graduated approach) SMART ( Specific, Measurable, Agreed, Realistic and time bound) targets will be set and reviewed. Various tools ASQ, ELKLAN, WELCOMM, 2 year old check will help us to assess your child's learning development. Person Centred review meetings will take place which will involve all parents/carer's and practitioner's working with your family. Individual plans will be used to monitor progress and effectiveness. These will be reviewed and changed if needed. Safeguarding Policy and procedure will be taken into account regarding a child's well-being.

How do we know my child is achieving agreed outcomes?

Online learning journal where you can access regular information, observations and development reports regarding your child's learning we be available for you to peruse. Following your child's Personal Centred Plan and targets set on their individual plan, which will be reviewed regularly. Using the Early Years Foundation Stage to monitor progress Discussions with parents/ carers on a regular basis.

How do you adapt for a child with extra needs?

Plan activities together to ensure they match the ability of each child by making reasonable adjustments. We match activities to the ability/ need of each child and modify toys and equipment to make sure they are age appropriate. Model appropriate behaviour and be a positive role model. An Inclusion Policy in place and maintain an inclusive learning environment. Rearrange the layout of our rooms so children can move around more easily. How accessible is your service, outside and inside?

There are ramps throughout the nursery for wheel chair access. Clear corridors with lots of space to move around. Rooms both downstairs and upstairs. Disabled toilets. Large outdoor play area. Separate, natural, outdoor garden.

How do you involve children in outings and trips?

The nursery has its own minibus and driver to assist with visits off site. We have a 6 seater pram Friendship walking ropes are used to link a group of children Risk assessments will be carried out on a regular basis.

How do you work with other organisations?

Regular phone calls/ emails/ letters to outside agencies for guidance and support offering them opportunities to come into nursery and observe practice. Multi agency meetings Person centred review meetings which involve all practitioner's working with your family. Staff attends regular training to enhance their own knowledge and development and feedback updates at monthly staff meetings.

How do you support children when they start and leave?

Three one hour visits are arranged when a child starts at our nursery giving them chance to explore with a secure base ( Pro-long visit if needed) Parents to stay initially to complete admission forms and baseline assessment on first visit. Each child is appointed their own key worker who will work alongside the child throughout their time at our setting. Children have their own online Tapestry journal which the key worker will access regularly to add information, observations and development reports regarding your child's learning. Personal, Social, Emotional activities are planned to help build relationships with staff and children. Outside agencies can come into nursery to ensure a smooth transition and provide advice if needed. When a child leaves our setting we provide a transition document to the new setting detailing the child's development Transition meeting with new setting giving opportunities for practitioner's to come and observe children in nursery before leaving. Provide new setting with reports, Person Centred planning etc. Pass on the child's background information sheet. Act out different situations to support transitions using the role play corner.

How are you/staff trained in extra needs?

The SEN Policy is read and reviewed regularly at staff meetings. Regular courses around SEND e.g. SEND reforms, Role of SENCO, little talkers etc are offered to our Special educational needs coordinator and other staff in nursery. SENCO ensures a good level of knowledge across all staff via staff meetings and training days. We have a specific ELKLAN leader in our setting. Communication Champion

What is your policy on compliments, complaints, concerns?

There is a Complaints procedure in place within our setting copies to complete can be found in the office. Parents/ carers questionnaires are available near our information board that can be filled in anonymously. They are also given out at parents evening/ stay and play sessions so we can continue to improve. There is also a comments box in the hallway available for parents/ carers to use.
