How do you identify special educational needs and disabilities?
We baseline all children within the first two weeks of being at nursery.
We use a software called"Spark" to track and monitor all children's progress, we are able to identify very early on if children are not on track, or are falling behind.
We have a newly qualified nursery Senco, However, the nursery Managing Director is very experienced in supporting children and their families with Special Needs.
We also have a good support network with other Oldham and Manchester nursery managers.
We have a strong ethos and believe every child should be given the opportunity to thrive in a high quality provision.
We are happy to undertake extra training to accommodate individual needs.
How do you involve parents/carers?
We carry out home visits for all our families before gradual admission, this helps us to build a firm mutually respectful relationship from day one. Our Managing Director leads on all home visits supported by the child's key worker.
We find parents are happier to discuss any concerns or worries in their own home.
Parents are the first educator of their child and will generally know their child the best and want the best for them. We appreciate and respect this. We take time to get to know our families and ensure not only the child is happy but the family also.
If a difficulty appears whilst the child is in nursery, we would initiate a conversation with the family to discuss our observations and gather their thoughts.
We would ensure we keep an open dialogue with families, ensuring they know and feel that we are on their side and will always do the best by their child.
If a family arrives at our nursery with needs already known, we would meet with the family and other professionals involved and establish what we need to do to ensure transition into nursery is smooth.
We will provide reports where necessary and lead on meetings where asked.
Parent partnership is paramount.
How do you support a child’s learning and development?
We use an online learning journal called"Spark" and for parents"Spark@home"
Children's next steps are updated every time a photo or observation is uploaded, parents can share their own photos and send staff information that will help to build their learning journal.
On a daily basis, staff share learning outcomes for individual children and base rooms of children. Parents are regularly kept informed of what nursery is doing, how and why.
We regularly ask for feedback to ensure we keep moving forward and improving what we do.

How do we know my child is achieving agreed outcomes?
"Spark" is your learning journey.
You can log onto to it at anytime night and day and can contact staff directly through the software.
Staff will share termly reports with you and will carry out"mini parents evening" every 6 weeks to ensure you know exactly where your child is up to.
How do you adapt for a child with extra needs?
We will assess the needs of every individual child and make reasonable adjustments where we can, we are wheelchair friendly on the ground floor.
How accessible is your service, outside and inside?
All ground floor rooms and gardens are fully accessible.
All age groups have their own outdoor gardens.
We do have a 1st floor play room and roof top garden, we do not have a lift.
The first floor provides our School ready room for children aged 3 - 5 who require all year round care.
We have 4 base rooms and are able to move groups of children round should a child in a wheel chair need to access our"School ready room" provision.
How do you involve children in outings and trips?
Again, we will work with parents and assess every individual child. We aim to be fully inclusive and with make necessary adaptations etc where necessary.
How do you work with other organisations?
External agencies are very welcome at Buttercup Corner and we work hard to ensure good lines of communication.
We encourage external agencies to come and visit children whilst in the nursery setting and carry out Integrated reviews with health visitors.
Where possible we will try to hold meetings at the nursery.
How do you support children when they start and leave?
Home visits are carried out before gradual admission.
One full week of settling is offered free of charge, we will extend this if child or family are not fully settled.
At Home visit, we will bring"Pilchard" our fluffy toy cat with us, we ask that parents encourage their child to take care of Pilchard and introduce him/her to key family members. Families then send us photos of Pilchard with family members and we turn these into a family book at nursery for each child.
This aids settling and allows the children to feel safe and secure.
Children leaving the setting will be helped to settle into their new school / nursery. We will meet with the new key worker to share information, facilitate settling visits at the new provision and encourage the new setting to come and visit the child whilst with us.
Parents will be fully informed and involved along the way. Transition documentation will be prepared,
How are you/staff trained in extra needs?
We have a newly qualified Oldham SENCO who has previously worked under Manchester.
The Nursery Managing Director has vast knowledge and experience of supporting families with SEND.
We meet as a staff team on a monthly basis, safeguarding and SEND are always on the agenda.
Staff are encouraged to ask questions and research. We will seek additional training where necessary.
What is your policy on compliments, complaints, concerns?
Firstly speak to your child's key worker, this usually resolves most concerns.
Managing Director is available at all times and is on site daily, if you feel you would prefer just call in the office for a chat at any point.
We strive to resolve all complaints and / or concerns quickly, in the same respect please do share with us any compliments and feedback you may have.
Ofsted are always available to discuss your concerns should you feel the nursery has not resolved it fully.
