How do you identify special educational needs and disabilities?

At LearnAid Nursery, we are committed to meeting the individual needs of every child. Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) are identified, assessed and reviewed regularly through ongoing observations, progress checks and evaluations of children’s learning and development in accordance to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Staff training is regularly updated to best meet and support our children with SEND.

How do you involve parents/carers?

As LearnAid Nursery recognises and values the crucial role of parents/carers in their children’s early learning and development, we ensure that parents/carers are at the centre of every decision that is made about their child. We regularly share our knowledge and expertise with parents/carers and ask parents/carers to share information regarding their child’s development with us. Parent/carer meetings take place termly to ensure that parents and carers are regularly informed about their child’s learning and development at the setting and to collaboratively identify how we can support children with their next steps, or with any areas of concern. Children’s Learning Journals are also shared with parents/carers on a regular basis. We feel it is very important to share the expected outcomes for each child according to the EYFS with their parents. Therefore, parents have a better understanding of identifying concerns with their child’s development.

How do you support a child’s learning and development?

We ensure that our staff are well trained to be able to confidently support parents/carers with their child’s learning and development, according to their child’s specific needs. We work in partnership with parents/carers and any external agencies, where necessary to best support every child’s individual needs. LearnAid Nursery recognises parents/carers as their child’s first teacher and most important influence. Therefore, we are committed to working in partnership with parents/carers to support children’s learning and development at home, as well as at the setting. Children’s next steps are shared with parents/carers so that we are able to work together to help children achieve. Home Learning is encouraged and strategies for supporting children are shared with parents/carers to ensure that our parents/carers feel fully supported in helping their child.

How do you meet a child’s educational needs?

LearnAid Nursery utilise ongoing observations of your child and evaluation of their engagement and development through planned activities centred around your child’s educational needs and wellbeing. At LearnAid Nursery, each child has an allocated member of staff as their key worker. A key worker is primarily responsible for ensuring that your child is supported with achieving their next steps in accordance with the EYFS. Ongoing observations and evaluation of your child’s engagement and development will establish staff with a good understanding of whether your child’s educational needs and well-being are being met. Where concerns are raised, these would be addressed immediately and evaluated which then allows us to tailor our planning to meet your child’s next steps.

How do we know my child is achieving agreed outcomes?

Parents/carers have access to their own child's data online. They can log in daily and see through daily diaries what activities their child has been taking part in, parents can view all areas of the EYFS and track and monitor the development of their child. Your child’s Learning Journal would also be shared with you regularly, so that you will know that your child is achieving the agreed outcomes. Parents will be provided with a termly progress report, which shows from term to term how well their child is doing in each area of the EYFS and how much progress they have made.

How do you adapt for a child with extra needs?

We ensure that our SEND children are able to access the planned activities and learn and develop at their own pace in a safe, stimulating and engaging environment. All activities and resources, as well as strategies used, are planned with your child’s specific needs in mind. We also have a quiet, stimulating sensory room for our SEND children for focused learning activities. Staff are well trained to consider how to adapt activities and resources to provide SEND children with a well-rounded, accessible and inclusive approach to learning.

How accessible is your service, outside and inside?

Our early years provision is easily and fully accessible to all our children. All the learning areas, and all facilities and provision, both indoors and outdoors are wheelchair accessible. All early year’s provision has been arranged to encourage children to independently access a wide range of resources and materials for them to use.

How do you involve children in outings and trips?

We would ensure that your child’s individual needs are catered for and planned for when planning any activities or trips outside the early years setting, to ensure that your child is able to safely take part in any provision away from the setting. All trips outside the early years setting are risk assessed and supervised appropriately by trained members of staff. Staff are required to vigorously consider all possible risks prior to any trip outside of the setting. Children are provided with opportunities to explore indoor and outdoor environments outside the setting, where possible to provide children with new experiences and a good understanding of the world around them.

How do you work with other organisations?

We exchange information with all our staff involved in caring for your child, health visitors and teachers amongst other professionals and parents to obtain as much information as possible to be able to best support your child. Staff are committed to working in partnership with multi-agency professionals to meet the needs of your child. Therefore, regular meetings will take place between the appropriate professionals, parents/carers to ensure that children are continuously supported. We also ensure that all our staff are well trained to support children with SEND.

How do you support children when they start and leave?

We have a settling in policy to help children to settle into our setting. This involves as many visits at different times as needed with a parent or carer, in advance of the start date. Parents/carers are welcome to stay with their child to support them with settling in. We ask that the child visits our setting at different times so that they become accustomed to the different routines throughout the day. Children are supported with understanding the routine with a visual daily routine. Children are allocated a key worker who will support your child with settling in and developing positive relationships with staff and other children. Regarding a child leaving our setting, we ensure that a transition document is completed and made available to the next practitioner to document the stage of development that the child is at. We would additionally help to reassure and prepare the child to aid as smooth a transition as possible by inviting reception teachers to come and visit the child at the setting or involve the child in transition days at their new setting. We would also have school uniforms in our role play area for children to get accustomed to their school uniform.

How are you/staff trained in extra needs?

We attend regular SEND training organised by Oldham Council and other external bodies. We also provide in-house training and share good practises to ensure all our staff are well trained to be able to plan for, evaluate, assess and review all our provision, ensuring we are best supporting our SEND children.

What is your policy on compliments, complaints, concerns?

We welcome parental feedback regularly and reflect on the feedback to improve our practice and provision to ensure that all staff are committed and strive to continually develop professionally and the provision at the setting to provide the best service possible. We have a written complaints policy with regard to concerns and complaints. I would invite parents and carers to follow the internal policy and in the event we are unable to resolve any issue then parents/carers can contact Ofsted who will deal with the complaint further.
