How do you identify special educational needs and disabilities?

When a child begins their journey at Swan Meadow Cottage Nursery we start with an Early Assessment Review to get a baseline of the child’s development. Throughout their time at nursery we continue to observe the children and plan for them accordingly. We track the children through the ‘Development Matters’ which is an age related progress checker. When the child is 2 we undertake a 2 year progress check to ensure that the child is on track for their age. All children take part in the ASQ, which is a questionnaire completed by practitioners and parents that assesses the child’s development and gives us a guideline to where the child is at and will also help to show if there may be any areas that the child needs support with.

How do you involve parents/carers?

We have regular parents’ evenings where we can update parents on the progress of their child and talk about any concerns. We speak to parents on a daily basis and they have the opportunity to talk to us about any issues or concerns that may be worrying them. Recently we have started using the online learning journey system, Tapestry, which enables parents to see their child’s development by logging onto their individual account. Parents can also use this as a platform to communicate with their child’s key worker and express any concerns that they may have. We recognise that parents need to be involved with every stage of their child’s development and encourage their contribution to their child’s learning journey. If needed we can extend settling in sessions so that parents feel more comfortable leaving their children. Home to nursery books can be used to pass on any information if parents think it will be beneficial. Daily feedback is provided to the parents, this involves things that their child has been doing during the day and any concerns that may need to be raised. If there are any concerns parents will be spoken to in a quiet room with no interruptions.

How do you support a child’s learning and development?

We plan exciting and engaging activities for the children around the EYFS or around their targets and strategies. When speaking to parents we find out the child’s interests and base our planning around this, where possible. Staff complete observations on every child and track their development, through this we can track any areas in which the child may be struggling in or need a little bit more support with. All strategies that are implemented are based on the child and what is best for them and their development. Every child is assigned a key worker, where possible this will be with the practitioner that develops the best bond with them during their settling in sessions. The key worker ensures that the children are being challenged and able to meet their full potential.

How do you meet a child’s educational needs?

We observe the child regularly to see what they can do and what areas they may struggle in. The planning is based on the child’s interests. We also ensure we provide enabling and stimulating environments in which each child’s play and learning is enhanced and encouraged. We believe in equal opportunities for all children and ensure that practitioners understand how to provide this. We track the child’s progress using the ‘Development Matters’, each child has their own copy of this and staff will highlight all the statements that the child is secure in, which allows staff to monitor any areas of strength or any areas that may need development.

How do we know my child is achieving agreed outcomes?

We hold regular meetings for the parents, key worker and any other professionals to check development. We talk about the strategies currently in place and if they are working and if not, what we might need to change. The child’s key worker and practitioners work closely with the SENCO to ensure that the targets are being implemented and working for the child. The key worker works closely with the SENCO to ensure that the targets are as best suited to the child as possible. We review the strategies and targets every 6-8 weeks with the parents and key worker to find out what we may need to change for the child. We ensure that parents are kept up to date with any progress that the children are making. To ensure that children are progressing we follow the assess, plan, do, and review process. Regular observations are carried out on the children through planned activities, spot observations and photographs. Termly parents’ evenings are held to discuss the progress that their child is making.

How do you adapt for a child with extra needs?

We work with the parents to discuss the needs of their child and do everything we can to accommodate for them and support the needs and wishes of the parents and the child.

How accessible is your service, outside and inside?

Both indoor and outdoor environments are very accessible. We have a disabled toilet next to our Woodland Pre-School. There are ramps on entry to all the outdoor environments and into all the rooms.

How do you involve children in outings and trips?

We ensure that the visit has been checked by a member of staff beforehand to ensure it is safe for all children and to make sure it is accessible for all. We ensure the travel arrangements accommodate for the needs of the children. The nursery also has prams which can be used for children who may struggle walking a long way. When on a visit we ensure we lower the ratio to make sure that the outing is as safe as possible.

How do you work with other organisations?

We work with outside agencies such as speech and language therapists and health visitors. This may be through written communication or verbal. We ensure that parents are aware of any outside agencies that may be involved with their child. Where possible the outside agencies may attend the meetings for the child to ensure that we are all working together to make sure that the child is receiving the best support they can. We also send staff on training provided by the local authority, staff will attend any relevant training to support children with additional needs.

How do you support children when they start and leave?

When a child first starts they will complete three pre-enrolment sessions, this is a session where the parent will attend with the child and have the opportunity to ask any questions or give any information that is needed to the staff. It gives the child the opportunity to settle into the environment with the parent and allows staff to see what works best for the child. Parents are asked to complete an ‘All About Me’ form for the child to ensure that staff know all necessary information. If a child is due to leave the setting, where possible the teachers will be invited to any meetings for the child and will usually visit to the nursery to get to know the child and find out any information. The staff also complete a transition document for the school so that they know where the children are up to with their development. If it is needed there is the opportunity for staff to visit the new setting with the child in order to help the child settle in. Staff make early contact with the school to ensure that the child is getting the best support possible.

How are you/staff trained in extra needs?

The SENCO has attended courses on ‘The Role of the SENCO’, ‘Working with parents’ and ‘Person Centred Planning’. The SENCO has also attended Elklan Speech and Language 0-3’s.

What is your policy on compliments, complaints, concerns?

If there are any queries parents are welcome to contact the nursery manager. Any complaints or concerns will be dealt with appropriately and in a timely and professional manner.
