How do you identify special educational needs and disabilities?

By observing children, speaking with parents, monitoring the children’s progress using the early year’s outcomes tracker, liaising with health visitors and other professionals. We use Elklan and Wellcomm strategies to support this.

How do you involve parents/carers?

We work with parents and have early discussions of any concerns we may have. We would then monitor the child's progress through targeted interventions and report back to parents our findings. We advise parents that they can contribute to their child's assessment and invite them to meetings.

How do you support a child’s learning and development?

We will involve you in your child's learning through assessments and informal discussions. We will ask parents to complete a baseline assessment to determine what age/stage of development their child is at so we can build on this. We have a good keyworker system in place which enables the child to have a first point of contact and the keyworker builds up relationships with parents to support us in getting to know the child. We have Learning Packs which we may give to parents to help support their child with specific learning tasks.

How do you meet a child’s educational needs?

The child will be allocated a keyworker usually on their first day who will be responsible for all the child's needs including personal needs. The keyworker will work on the information given by parents from the baseline assessment to inform their plans and next steps for learning. The keyworker will assess the child throughout each term and complete assessment forms and learning journeys to show to parents

How do we know my child is achieving agreed outcomes?

We will all know the child is achieving by the completed assessment forms and informal discussions the parent will have with the Manager and keyworker. The manager would inform parents of any concerns regarding their child and set targeted interventions as required

How do you adapt for a child with extra needs?

Activities and resources are adapted to allow all children to participate, for example; adding visual aids or providing additional targeted resources where necessary, ensuring learning areas are wheelchair accessible. We actively seek and follow professional advice regarding supporting children with additional needs. One to one support can be provided for children were indicated by educational health care plans.

How accessible is your service, outside and inside?

Completely accessible for any abiility or disability

How do you involve children in outings and trips?

We would ensure that there enough staff for the recommended ratios and an extra one besides. We also have reins that children hold onto when we go out on walks. We do not at the moment do coach trips

How do you work with other organisations?

We make referrals when needed and invite them into the setting to observe the child and also to attend our review meetings. This enables them to contribute to the child's targeted interventions. The manager would liaise with external agencies throughout the term if assistance was needed. The advice given by other professionals is shared with staff so we are all working from the same document to support the child's development

How do you support children when they start and leave?

The keyworkers are available at the beginning and end of each day. We have a staff member on the door to meet and greet parents and children. We have introductory visits for new children so they know the staff and this helps to settle them in quicker. We support parents also who are leaving their child for the first time and make sure they are comfortable in leaving them

How are you/staff trained in extra needs?

The Manager and Deputy Manager are SENCO trained. All staff have Autism training and we have had other types of training such as Asthma, Epilepsy, Dealing with children who have complex needs, Behaviour Management
