How do you identify special educational needs and disabilities?

When starting the setting children are baselined within 2-4 weeks of the child's start date, dependent on the sessions/days the child attends. We use tapestry alongside our paper based learning journals and the EYFS to monitor each child's development. We have a nursery Senco who attends network meetings, as well as the manager having experience as a Senco. We also have staff who have attended additional needs training. We work with the local early years as well as other managers and Senco's

How do you involve parents/carers?

We encourage children/parents to have as many visits as they feel they need where possible, it has to be about the child and their families. During the visit staff/management begin to build a relationship with the family and any concerns they may have can be discussed. On the nursery application form we ask if a parent feel their child may have a disability, this gives us time to gather information on how we can support the child and their family going forward. We want to get to know a child and their family so we can keep all areas of communication open that suits them to best support them. If a child starts the setting with an existing need, we will spend time getting to know any outside agencies that are already involved, get to know the family and their background, possible home visits as well as visits to other settings the child may attend.

How do you support a child’s learning and development?

We use Tapestry which allows staff to complete an observation/next steps that goes online, each parent has a activation email which allows them to set up a password which is private to them. Parents can also access this and add their own pictures and observations on what their child does at home. These observations help to create a child's next step which is individual to them, this is paper based within the child's room. We also use our face book page to keep parents updated with nursery life as well as our parents group, which is a closed group just for parents and families that are approved by the manager or deputy. These help to give parents a platform to share ideas, news and suggestions.

How do you meet a child’s educational needs?

We support all children and their families individually, what may work for one family may not for another. We are open to new ideas that can help us to support individual requirements.

How do we know my child is achieving agreed outcomes?

We use tapestry alongside the EYFS, as stated previously parents can log in to see where their child is developmentally and what they have been up to that day. We also complete termly reports and the end of each term, for parents to read and comment on as well as parents evenings twice a year. If parents are unable to make the evening we will arrange an alternative time for them to meet with their child's keyperson. We have an open door policy, where we encourage parents to speak to us when ever is best for them, this can be in person or over the phone or email. We have found our face book page has been brilliant at allowing parents an opportunity to private message us when best suits them.

How do you adapt for a child with extra needs?

We treat all children as individuals and a just activities to suit their needs, for example a table top activity can become a floor activity. Our downstairs floor is wheelchair friendly with large doors and a toilet.

How accessible is your service, outside and inside?

Downstairs we have our caterpillar room which is for children ages 3 month to approximately 2 years and our butterflies room which is 2 to 3years. Our pre school room is upstairs. All rooms access the same outside area, although caterpillars can use a space to the side of nursery which is covered. When outside the equipment and resources are changed and vary dependent on the children's age and abilities. Our outside space can be accessed via steps or a slop to the side of nursery.

How do you involve children in outings and trips?

We try to plan trip's that are around children's interests and abilities as well as taking distance into account. When planning a trip we ask for parents input and keep them informed all along the way. We make sure we involve all children and make any adaptions we can to support all children.

How do you work with other organisations?

We welcome all agencies to nursery and will attend any meetings/training off site or on site as much as possible. Agencies are able to ring or email us as well as arranging possible visits if needed. We aim to keep communication with agencies at a high to best support the child and family.

How do you support children when they start and leave?

When starting the setting we encourage visits to the nursery with family. We have recently extended the job roles of our room bears, now children will take them home on their first nursery visit and bring them back the next time they visit. During their time with each child they can show them to friends and family and we will ask parents to send us photographs, we will then use the photographs to help the child feel settled on their first days by themselves. We also have goodie bags for parents for when they leave their child for the first time, to help them feel as settled as their child.

How are you/staff trained in extra needs?

We have a nursery Senco who attends local network meetings and has a number of years experience in the role. The nursery manager is also Senco trained, with a number of staff accessing training in specific areas. We have a staff meeting every 2 months which covers safeguarding and will begin to have send on the agenda. If and when needed we would under take training.

What is your policy on compliments, complaints, concerns?

With complaints, parents can speak to their child's key person or the manager/deputy are on site, we also have team leaders on site to speak to who can deal with an issue and contact the manager. The office door is always open to help support and encourage our open door policy. We clearly display OFSTED contact number should a parent feel the nursery has not dealt with a complaint accordingly, however we strive to deal with complaints affectively and efficiently constantly keeping parent's involved. We make sure staff are aware of such events and any changes, usually through a staff meeting. When we receive a compliment we always share with staff to pass on good feedback.
