How do you identify special educational needs and disabilities?

Through initial child induction (taster sessions), discussions with parents, All About Me which parents complete giving us lots of information on their child including likes, dislikes what they are able to do and anything they may be struggling with. ASQ Questionnaire, Baseline reports, assessments and observations. Ongoing monitoring with development trackers to support identifying areas of difficulty enabling Early Intervention. Nursery has a named Senco who attend training and updates provided by the Local Borough.

How do you involve parents/carers?

Through discussions, meetings and shared information with parents. Keeping parents updated on development trackers. If a child arrives at nursery with additional needs known parents, nursery and outside agencies involved will meet to put a plan in place to ensure as smooth a transition as possible.

How do you support a child’s learning and development?

Daily discussions and advice if required with key person and Senco, Home Nursery Diaries, Plan Do and Review, Person Centred Planning and 4+1 Reviews. Referrals to outside agencies if required after discussing with parents. Staff attend training required to accommodate individual needs, and advise parents on available training and workshops.

How do you meet a child’s educational needs?

Nursery ensure targets are being met and are being reviewed, following advice from professionals. Regular Plan Do and Review meetings, and 4+1 reviews with nursery, parents and outside agencies involved. Nursery use a Person Centred Approach sharing information and ideas to look at the best way we can support a child taking into account the child's likes and views.

How do we know my child is achieving agreed outcomes?

Children’s development is continually monitored and information shared with parents. Childs file and Learning Journey is available for parents to look through and discuss with staff. Regular Plan do and Review meetings and 4+1 reviews with nursery staff and outside agencies involved.

How do you adapt for a child with extra needs?

Nursery assess the needs of every child as an individual and make reasonable adjustments where possible, this is continually reviewed and adapted using advice resources and equipment provided by outside agencies involved. Children on the SEN register have their own targets from Person Centred Plans which are included in the weekly planning.

How accessible is your service, outside and inside?

How do you involve children in outings and trips?

Risk assessments are carried out and a plan put in place to support children’s safety. We aim to be inclusive and will make necessary adaptions where possible.

How do you work with other organisations?

Nursery have a good relationship with outside agencies particularly Additional Needs Team, Speech and Language Therapists, Health Visitors and Physical Needs Team. We are able to accommodate for meetings and reviews. Sencos are confident to make referrals to outside agencies after speaking to parents. Advice received from outside agencies is included in children's plans to support their development. Outside agencies are welcome to visit nursery to complete assessments and observations and are also invited to regular update meetings Person Centred Plans and 4+1 reviews.

How do you support children when they start and leave?

New starters are offered taster sessions prior to starting nursery .giving parents and children an opportunity to get to know Key person and other staff. Parents complete an All About Me so staff are aware of child's likes and dislikes etc. Staff complete a My First Week and Baseline that they share with parents. When needed meetings with parents and professionals are held to plan for training, resources and equipment that may be required prior to the child starting. Risk assessments and care plans discussed and put in place where required. On leaving children are provided with a transition document for their new school and their Learning Journey. Nursery have supported transition by attending meetings and visits to new school with parents. School are invited into nursery for transition meetings when required.

How are you/staff trained in extra needs?

Nursery have a named Senco plus a Senior Senco. Sencos attend regular training and updates provided by Additional Needs Team and Local Borough. Sencos are confident to request additional training to support children's needs when required. Regular in house training is provided by Managers and Sencos.

What is your policy on compliments, complaints, concerns?

Childs Key person or room leader are available to discuss concerns and compliments. However, if you would like to speak to the manger she is on site every day, complaints are looked into and dealt with accordingly. A copy of our Complaints Policy and Procedure are available for our parents to look through on the parent’s notice board. We welcome feedback from our parents so we are able to continually improve our service.
