How do you identify special educational needs and disabilities?

We have an experienced and well trained SENCo who works alongside local agencies and professionals to support children, families and staff. Our staff have a good knowledge and understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage framework to help them identify any gaps in development, using CHAPs and observations to support their opinions.

How do you involve parents/carers?

Parents are invited to have an input in their child's learning and development alongside the nursery and concerns or gaps in development are discussed when they arise. One of the ways we do this is by asking parents to fill in parental insight sheets for their child at least once per term, which feed into our weekly planning.

How do you support a child’s learning and development?

We will include you in our planning process through our parental insight sheets and by asking verbal questions to support your child's learning and ask for your opinions and views as often as possible.

How do you meet a child’s educational needs?

Staff at the setting will observe your child at every opportunity, noting any key points and moments in their learning and development. They will analyse the information they have collected to highlight any gaps in your child's learning, and plan activities to support your child to meet these development points. We will approach parents/carers regarding any concerns we have, and where necessary, we will gain input from outside agencies to support your child further, whilst in our care. We will follow the advice of professionals where given and attend any training when needed.

How do we know my child is achieving agreed outcomes?

Termly development reports are compiled by your child's keyworker, where observations are analysed and any progress or concerns regarding your child are communicated to you. If your child already has outside agencies involved, we will feedback any relevant information to these agencies, allow them to come and observe your child within the setting and ensure that they, along with yourself, are invited to any meetings where your child's development will be discussed. We hold person centred review meetings and 4 plus 1 meetings, where progress is discussed and any changes made. Copies of any reviews or reports written at these meetings will be sent to the professionals involved with your child, as well as yourself as parent/carer.

How do you adapt for a child with extra needs?

Activities are planned by keyworkers to allow as many children as possible to engage in the activity. If necessary, different resources or materials may be supplied to allow a child to access an activity; a different area may be used to allow a child access or even extra staff may be deployed to ensure that all children can access activities safely and effectively.

How accessible is your service, outside and inside?

Our setting is split over two floors. Children within the 0 to 3 age range are located on the ground floor of the building, as well as within our portakabin base room. All of these rooms are accessible to wheelchair users and users requiring walking aids. Outdoor areas are accessed from each base room, but require a slight step down in order to access the areas. Access from the portakabin to the outdoors area, is down two small steps. In both instances, small ramps would support the accessibility of the outdoor area. Our children aged 3 to 5 occupy the rooms on our first floor, where stairs are the only method of getting to these rooms. The staircase is wide and provides two handrails (one at adult and one at child height). Children in our pre-school room have to exit the building down the same stairs to access our outdoors area.

How do you involve children in outings and trips?

As with all outings, a written risk assessment would be carried out before children were taken out of the setting, where all aspects of the outing would be considered. If necessary higher staff child ratios would be used, as well as safety restraints (harness/reins) or transport (6 seater buggy/ prams) A child's specific additional needs would be considered, ensuring that anything that makes a child uncomfortable, or scared is taken into account; removed from the situation or it's effects limited where possible.

How do you work with other organisations?

At present, we work alongside agencies such as speech and language therapists, foster carers, social workers, AEN advisors, health visitors, and paediatricians to support children fully. We organise and conduct multi-agency meetings at our setting, allowing us to discuss, review and set targets for children with SEND, compile the meeting minutes and develop person centred reviews, personal care plans and other relevant documentation to support children's learning and development.

How do you support children when they start and leave?

Children are offered two one hour long sessions on their entry into the setting. During these sessions, the staff take note of how a child is starting to settle, and if further settling sessions are required, these are scheduled until the child has settled completely. At all stages, parents/carers viewpoints are taken into consideration and where possible, used to influence the settling in sessions. We allow teachers and other practitioners into the setting to meet the children and speak to staff, keyworkers etc. We invite any setting SENCos to the relevant meetings to be part of the Person Centred Review and 4 plus 1 meetings, to ensure they have a full understanding. When needed we will support the child in the new setting by organising a visit to the new setting with a member of staff going along to support the transition.

How are you/staff trained in extra needs?

SENCo attends the majority of relevant training offered and disseminates to any relevant staff. When training is offered that will benefit particular children whom we care for, the child's keyworker will be sent on this training, and where possible, the setting SENCo will also attend.

What is your policy on compliments, complaints, concerns?

Parents/carers are asked to speak to management regarding any complaints or issues in the first instance, who will investigate and report back to you within 28 days. If you are not happy with the outcome, or do not feel you can talk to management regarding the issue, you can ring Ofsted and report your concerns to them.
