How do you identify special educational needs and disabilities?

When a child starts at Starfish Day Nursery they are allocated a key worker. Within a couple of weeks when the child is starting to settle they will have a baseline assessment of their development in line with the EYFS. This is added to our online software ''Tapestry'' which continually tracks and monitors the child's progress during their time at nursery. The nursery manager who has SENCO alongside two other senior members of staff monitor children's progress through tracking, two year reports and end of term reports. In addition to this if parents have any concerns about their child's development they can discuss this with the SENCO. The keyworker and SENCO will always discuss any concerns, targets and plans ensuring parents are fully informed and involved. We are happy to undertake any extra training to accommodate individual needs and keep knowledge up to date.

How do you involve parents/carers?

Initially we carry out home visits for all our families. At this stage parents are able to provide us with in depth information about their child. The advantage of the home visit for parents is that both them and the child are in an environment where they feel confident and safe. Communication and information sharing is more effective as parents are happier to discuss any concerns in their own home. Parents will then receive daily reports, observations via email, termly reports and a parent meeting every other term. All of the reports parents receive enable them to add their own input as well ensuring an open dialogue is kept. Parents are also able to add any achievements or targets that the child may have met at home through written dialogue, photos or videos. This ensures there is continuity and communication of the child's ongoing progress.

How do you support a child’s learning and development?

Long term staff and experienced SENCO''s can identify children's needs. A person centred approach we adapt is about listening, sharing and acting upon. On a daily basis parents are kept informed of their child's progress. We ensure our environment, routines and activities supports each child's needs. Our planning is in the moment and based around each child's individual needs and interests. Parents are provided with their children's next steps and activities are given that can be done at home. There are many opportunities for parents to offer their feedback bringing everyone together to find the most appropriate route to support the child's learning and development.

How do you meet a child’s educational needs?

Whilst your child is at Starfish there is a continual monitoring of their progress. This is regularly evaluated through termly reports and any concerns are immediately flagged up and acted upon. The staff team are long standing and communicate and work very well together. Good communication within the SENCO and staff team provides consistency for children and their families through a process of planning, observations and assessments.

How do we know my child is achieving agreed outcomes?

Your child will have their own ''individual learning journey'' on our Tapestry software. Parents can access this at anytime to view child's progress, targets and next steps. The journals are updated daily to ensure all information is up to date. Parents can add to the journal with achieved goals, input or concerns at anytime.

How do you adapt for a child with extra needs?

All planning is in the moment and led by the abilities and interests of the child. We differentiate all activities and routines to suit the children. Reasonable adjustments are made where we can. Outdoors is accessible with a wheelchair, quiet areas are based in each room and individual needs can be met i.e visual timetables.

How accessible is your service, outside and inside?

The nursery is based on two floors, the stairs are not steep and a child height handrail is in place. We do not have a lift but there is wheelchair access to the downstairs rooms and the outside area, All furniture is child size and accessible to all children.

How do you involve children in outings and trips?

All trips and outside activities are planned to involve all of the children. We work with parents and every individual child will be risk assessed. Parents are invited to join us on trips and the risk assessment is carried out prior to the trip. We would take first aid, medication and any other requirements with us on the trip.

How do you work with other organisations?

Staff are friendly and welcoming and external agencies are very welcome to Starfish. We accommodate meetings and reviews within the setting and staff are very happy to take on the advice of other agencies in order that children's areas of development are fully supported. During a detailed parent pack staff have details of health visitors, Gp,s etc to communicate and receive any advice from.

How do you support children when they start and leave?

All children receive a home visit and setting in sessions without extra charge. The sessions provide opportunities to get to know both the family and children and provides an opportunity to share details of the child's needs and involvement of any other agencies. If your child is transfering from another nursery that has Tapestry their ''individual learning journal'' can be transferred over. This ensures transitions run smoothly and all important information is passed on. When leaving nursery each child will have a transition document sent to their new school. The learning journals are downloaded onto a disc for parents providing detailed information of children's progress and next steps which they can keep for memories and give to their new school if required.

How are you/staff trained in extra needs?

We have three experienced members of staff with SENCO training. Other staff have accessed relevant courses such as ELKAN, speech and language, communication etc. We have an experienced staff team and regular staff meetings keep staff aware of current legislation and available training. As each child attends further training will be sought to support that child's individual needs.

What is your policy on compliments, complaints, concerns?

Included in our parent pack on the home visit is a detailed guide to compliments, complaints or concerns. We have an open door policy and ensure our parents are listened to and their opinions are valued. Parents are welcome to speak to their child's key worker or whoever they feel most comfortable with. We welcome feedback as we want to ensure our parents and families are happy to discuss any concerns. We will work together with parents to put a plan into place to overcome any issues. Compliments are very welcome and we love to receive positive feedback for other parents and OFSTED.
