How do you identify special educational needs and disabilities?

I identify Special Educational Needs and Disability by speaking to parents, through training, by liasing and working in partnership with early years professionals and health care workers, teachers etc. Furthermore, I use observation and record keeping as well as experience from past training to identify possible SEND.

How do you involve parents/carers?

I involve parents in identifying if a child has SEN/D during regular consultations and information sharing. Whilst discussing with parents during the registeration process, I ask questions about traits and characteristics of the child that they might find challenging and I ensure that I do thorough observation of that behaiour to assure the parents that the behaviour is expected or otherwise.

How do you support a child’s learning and development?

I share daily updates in the form of daily diaries with parents. Also through careful and planned observation, I set out targets and goals for the children to achieve and I always provide parents with feedback to assure them that the goals are being met or what additional support might be required for their child's development and progress. This is provided in addition to sharing the child's learning journey by giving them daily written records to bring home.

How do you meet a child’s educational needs?

Tailored learning based on the child's ability and educational needs would always be adopted to ensure that they enjoy their education and feel stimulated and challenged at the same time. As I get to know each child, I will monitor their learning strides and their progress and ensure that my planning is tailored to meet the individual child's next steps.

How do we know my child is achieving agreed outcomes?

We will both have records of their progress, we would use the SMART goal setting approach to monitor goal achievement. The goals would be Specific Measurable Assignable Relevant and Timed. We would have records of 'before' and 'after' to compare as well.

How do you adapt for a child with extra needs?

All my play resources are CE marked as safe. Adapting the learning environment would be done by making reasonable adjustments as far as health and safety permits. Such adaptations might involve the use of smaller softer balls or bean bags in a basket ball game or using a plastic bin as the basket if mobility is a constraint. I am very practical and resourceful and would look to the child to indicate their level of ability and I would support them to be included as much as possible.

How accessible is your service, outside and inside?

I have a child-friendly layout that flows freely from one room to the next. I also have a safety gate as well as locks on the kitchen door to prevent unchaperoned access. My garden and outdoor area is easily accessible although I have a step that I would use a ramp on for ease of access in a wheelchair.

How do you involve children in outings and trips?

My continuous risk assessment means that I would only arrange trips that are safe enough for all kids and considering all abilities. Where necessary, I would involve other childminders in my area so that we can all go as a group and have fun together whilst keeping an eye on each other. All due care would be taken to ensure that every child is included in all activities.

How do you work with other organisations?

I work in partnership with a all those involved in the care of all the children in my setting. I would work with health visitors, family support workers, multidisciplinary team, Ofsted the police and indeed any concerned party involved in the goal of achieving that wholesome child.

How do you support children when they start and leave?

I operate a settling in period which is arranged by agreement with parents and is child specific as children vary regarding how soon they adjust to a new surrounding. I also gather information from parents about their child and any other professionals involved with the child. Children are supported in transitions by use of photographs of new settings and staff and regular visits and where possible stays at the new setting.

How are you/staff trained in extra needs?

Parents can always provide vital information about their child in the area of specific special needs. I would also use regular updated leaning like E learning and online courses, face to face a CPD courses to get more information on SEN/D. Regular observation and annual mandatory training would be a good source of more information on SEN/D.

What is your policy on compliments, complaints, concerns?

As a first point of call, I would always appreciate feedback. This would help me know what my areas of excellence and improvements are. I would give a written response as soon as they are received or otherwise within 28 of receiving them. Also parents receive a copy of my Complaints policy which provides what action they need to take and the outcome. Parents usually share compliments verbally or through cards. Regular chats with parents ensures any concerns they have will be dealt with. With babies I use a daily diary that parents can also use to write anything in. As a last resort, Ofsted and the police can also be contacted.
