Our Family Services:

The way we see things, support for parents is as important as support for their children. There are lots of little day to day pressures that we can take away, which make your day a bit easier and allow you more time to simply relax and enjoy being with your child. We call them our ‘Family Services’ and we’ve tried to think of everything, from posting letters to an amazing local business who can walk your pooches!

  • On-site essentials, we stock nappies, teething gel and other items that always run out at the most inconvenient time.
  • Drop off your laundry, dry cleaning, repairs, ironing and post, amongst other things, and we’ll sort it out for you.
  • We provide free tea and coffee and pastries ‘to go’ for all our parents to help start and end the day.
  • We are partnered with an amazing local service Waggie Wonders who will look after your adorable pooch! Daily walks to full day care service.
  • Babysitting. We can give you a night off, with one of our experienced team coming around to babysit.
  • Short notice service. If we have a place and you need to book an extra session, just call; if we can accommodate your child we will.
  • Parent and child fun and educational activities ranges from dancing and drama to language classes. These run during the day, throughout the week.
  • Parent classes. We host several sessions for our parents, including exercise classes such as yoga, NCT parenting classes and discounted paediatric first aid training from a qualified instructor (who also trains our team)

How do you identify special educational needs and disabilities?

The start of the family’s journey with us is key to ensuring we provide the best possible care available. We will visit the family home and spend time getting to know the family and complete starting points for their child. We will listen attentively to the parents and note any concerns while celebrating the child’s achievements so far. Once the child has settled with us at nursery, we will complete a baseline assessment from what we have observed. There is a dedicated SENCO. However, our teamwork very closely together, sharing information daily. We use the graduated response and other strategies and tools, for example, wellcomm to ensure we identify any areas that may need intervention at an early stage. Through regular assessment, we are also able to work on specific areas with the child and put further strategies in place. We also reflect on the environment and resources on a daily basis. Identification, strategies, support and reflection are key.

How do you involve parents/carers?

During the home visit, the parents can discuss their concerns with us within a secure environment. The parents will feel more comfortable and at ease. We will work through their concerns and explain the strategies detailed above that we can implement at nursery to support their child. We will also liaise with other professionals prior to the child starting nursery. If there are no concerns discussed at the home visit and these become apparent once the child has started nursery through observation and assessment we will use the graduated response and work closely with the parents, building on strategies and supporting the child and family. By working with the parent from the outset this builds excellent communication, support, trust and ultimately progress. If we feel additional support is required along with a referral, again we will discuss this together and contact the relevant departments. Building positive relationships with our parents is of utmost importance.

How do you support a child’s learning and development?

Our highly trained practitioners use In the Moment Planning, which allows the child’s key worker and SENCO to support the child in a highly effective way. They will recognise a spark during your child’s play, deliver a teachable moment and deliver the next step. This is important for all children, and if there is an additional support plan in place with strategies being used this planning can be very effective. All children learn in different ways and a child with send is no different. In the Moment Planning focuses on the child and along with an additional support plan and highly effective key worker the outcomes are higher. We will share with you every term and more frequently if required your child’s progress and how we can work together to ensure your child can reach their full potential. This will be ideas for home and how all the family can be involved in the learning journey. We will also have parent meetings to update the additional support plan and each time we will review and celebrate the achievements so far while also developing new targets. We will also hold parent information evenings where parents can learn about the early years curriculum and chat about various activities with staff and why those activities are particularly effective for the children’s learning and development.

How do you meet a child’s educational needs?

The child’s well-being is of the highest priority. If the child feels safe and secure in their environment and has the opportunity to build positive relationships with our staff they will flourish and be the best they can be. Our nursery provides all of the above which in turn promotes learning and development. The child will feel confident to try out new things and have a go and also accept challenges due to the encouragement and support around them. External professionals will support us too developing further strategies and targets. A whole team approach is vital in ensuring the child’s needs are met.

How do we know my child is achieving agreed outcomes?

Our staff team and key workers will observe and assess where the child is at termly. Team discussions will also take place which include the SENCO and management, prior to the assessment being made. Again this ensures teamwork within the setting and consistency in approach. The progress is delivered to the parents at parents evening and if there are any concerns we will discuss how we can support the child further. We also arrange a further meeting to start or review an additional support plan and proposed strategies/targets. As discussed earlier the environment is reflected on daily and will also be reviewed by the team every term. It is important to be aware that the environment can have an enormous impact on learning and development.

How do you adapt for a child with extra needs?

Each child is unique and their needs and wellbeing are assessed on starting and during their time with us. All of the nursery is on the ground floor. We have an adapted toilet and facilities. All activities and resources will be assessed and adapted as necessary and we will make reasonable adjustments where possible. Each room leads to outdoor play and again the area is on one level and easily accessed. Our practitioners will receive training on send at every staff meeting in addition to external training and the whole team will be able to support the child throughout the whole nursery each day.

How accessible is your service, outside and inside?

As discussed above the nursery is on the ground floor with all rooms and the outdoors being easily accessible. This layout also supports our strong nursery family ethos where all the children are able to easily access the other rooms to play, help and build friendships with their peers and practitioners.

How do you involve children in outings and trips?

All the children are individuals and we will assess any of their individual needs prior to activities and trips outside the setting. The team will know the child and family well and we will make the necessary reasonable adaptations where possible. As a team we will be looking for activities and trips that are inclusive for every child at our setting. Parents and carers are always welcome to join the nursery when going on trips in order to support their child’s learning and educational journey further.

How do you work with other organisations?

External professionals are invited to visit the setting at anytime to discuss the child and we also keep in contact by other means of communication. We value their expertise and advice and implement their strategies and targets and other advice to help support the child. As a team everyone achieves more. We invite them to nursery if we are having a meeting with the parents/carers to ensure we are all working together and implementing the strategies and targets as a team while reflecting on progress and addressing any new concerns.

How do you support children when they start and leave?

We visit the family and child before they start at nursery to build relationships and make them feel at ease. We then offer two settling in sessions, however, every child is unique and if they need a little longer this is arranged. Once the child has settled we will observe and assess what the child can do in order to propel their learning. It is important not to do this immediately as this will not give an accurate reflection of the child during transition. Supporting their well-being and making them feel safe and secure while building positive relationships is our initial priority and then their learning and development will flourish. A daily diary will be provided to the parents and there will be a conversation every day on drop off and collection with a practitioner celebrating their child’s achievements. When the child leaves the setting we make contact with the new setting or school. We share where the child is at developmentally and include an “all about me”. From experience, it is the latter that the new setting/school value as this helps them understand the child and their likes and dislikes. The new schools are invited into the setting and we also visit the schools to see the routine that our children will experience. This allows us to have excellent transition strategies in place prior to the child leaving us so they are confident in their transition. We also promote ways in which the children can self regulate. For example, simple yoga and breathing techniques to help them during any anxious moments where it may not be openly transparent how they are feeling. We go over and above to ensure our children are ready for their transition and the new setting/school “know them”.

How are you/staff trained in extra needs?

We have a dedicated SENCO. We also have senior staff who have experience in working in family homes, supporting the family in learning and development, strategies and targets. Experience is shared and valued throughout the team. All staff receive send training at every staff meeting and send training is accessed externally. The team also access CPD training online and understand the importance of keeping up to date with research and developments.

What is your policy on compliments, complaints, concerns?

In the first instance please speak to the child’s key worker. If they are not available please ask to speak to a member of senior staff or management. We are here to listen and work with you to address any concerns and complaints. Again, if you have compliments we would love to hear these and again please pass these to the key worker or management team. We have regular questionnaires, so hopefully we can acquire your feedback on a regular basis.
