Starfish will be re commencing our specialist lessons from Monday 5th October 2020
We have been advised by Public Health that you also liaise with your child's Paediatrician and or Specialist Nurses before returning to Starfish. This is to ensure everyone's safety. We have specialised Risk Assessments in place and have documented that children with additional needs and disabilities will require enhanced support and guidance whilst in the aquatic environment. Starfish staff will therefore maintain the social distance as far as reasonably practicable, we must reinforce that we will not be held liable if we need to break the social distance to ensure your or another child's safety and well being whilst in our provision.
There will be changes as I hope you can all appreciate such as pool layouts, specified changing areas and the requirement for ALL parents, guardians and carers to wear a face covering whilst in the building at all times.
You will be able to enter the building via the front entrance and walk through to the changing village utilising a specific changing area which will be allocated to you upon arrival. You will then need to follow the one way system into the pool area where your childs' swimming teacher will greet them.
We have made reasonable adjustments and can allow one member per household on to the poolside however you will be required to wear a mask, socially distance at all times and must adhere to our Safeguarding Policy of NO PHONES whilst in the building. We would prefer if you could wait in the cafe for your child's lesson to finish due to social distancing restrictions on the poolside, however if you do not feel that this meets the individual needs of your child then please contact us to discuss.
Your child's day will remain the same and the time may be amended by 15 minutes either way due to the staggered start and finish times now required.
Starfish offers tuition for children from birth upwards.
We specialise in water confidence, learning through play and stroke efficiency.
We have small classes and until the children are competent swimmers; all teachers are in the water with the children enabling them to trust the teacher and gain confidence.
All our teachers are passionate, caring, enthusiastic and energetic meaning children are motivated to achieve and given the all important confidence to swim independently.
SEND Local Offer
Starfish are proud that they are one of the very few swimming schools in the North West of England qualified to specialise in teaching children with additional needs and disabilities.
Our instructors have also completed a 'sign along' qualification and a foundation introduction in British Sign Language.
We have also undergone intensive specialised training in how to teach children and young adults with additional needs and disabilities.
We have a diverse, energetic and creative approach to these lessons as past experience has taught us it is the best way. We currently teach children with the following disabilities:
- Autistic Spectrum
- Cerebral Palsy
- Global Development Delay
- Hearing Impairment
- Spinal Cord Injuries
- Visual Impairment
- Genetic Disorders
- Learning Difficulties
- Behavioural Difficulties
- Heart Conditions
- Downs Syndrome
- Muscular Dystrophy
If your child has a disability that we haven't mentioned above please do contact us and we will do our utmost to accommodate them at Starfish.
All lessons are run in line with the ASA National Development for Swimming in the UK.
We also offer consultancy for teaching assistants who accompany disabled children to school swimming. For example if you are a mainstream school who use the council school swimming service and you have a disabled child in the class that needs additional help in the pool.
Here at Starfish we will offer you a Risk Assessment, Ability Report and specialised lesson plans for the child.
This service is very unique but is a valuable tool as swimming is a sport that every child can participate in.
