Ruby's story

My name is Ruby, I am fostered like you.

Yes, times were hard at first, but I got through it, just like you will.

It helped me to have carers that I could talk to about my past and what was on mind and how my day had been.

If I got upset at school, I could talk to them, and they knew how help me.

Your foster carers are not there to replace your family or your mum and dad.

I still get to see my family quite a lot, hopefully you will do too.

When I first came to live with my foster family I was really scared and didn’t know what to expect, I was thinking, what if they are horrible?

But in reality, they are there to help, and now they treat me like a daughter.

I have now lived with my foster family for nearly four years, and I feel a big part of the family, and that makes me feel happy.

My foster family work as a team with my parents and other family members to do what is best for me.

They look after me when I am sick, are proud of me when I am good and keep me safe.

They have also helped me to learn how to swim, taught me how to ride a bike and took me on holidays.

So please, please don’t be frightened because there is nothing to be afraid of.

Good Luck, Love Ruby xx

Thinking of fostering?

You have come to the right place.

As a local authority fostering agency, we are a non-profit organisation, who put children first and at the heart of everything we do.

If you foster for Oldham, you will care for a local child or young person, so they can continue to live in Oldham, close to their friends and school.

What is fostering?

Fostering is caring for someone else’s child in your home whilst they cannot live with their own family. Children and young people need fostering for all sorts of reasons and for different lengths of time.

Can I foster?

Don’t worry, there is no such thing as a typical foster carer.

We need a range of carers to meet the diverse needs of all our children.

We welcome enquiries from everybody irrespective of ethnicity, religion, gender, sexuality, marital or employment status or disability.

What support would I receive?

Fostering a child or young person is one of the most rewarding things that you can do, but we know that it is also hard work so we will be with you every step of the way.
