What is the difference between a local authority fostering agency and an independent fostering agency?

Local authority fostering agencies are a non-profit organisations, who have legal responsibility for children and young people needing foster families.

When the decision is made that a child or young person has to come into our care, local authority agencies always look to place a child locally, within their home community and with our own local authority foster carers first.

Independent Fostering Agencies (IFA’s) are agencies that solely recruit foster carers. Often, they are part of a larger UK wide fostering agency.
