The JR Clynes Building first opened as a library and art gallery in 1883.

The Lady Wrigley statue sits atop of the historic building, proudly holding a laurel wreath in one hand and a book in the other, symbolising victory and triumph.

She was named as a snub to Colonel William Wrigley, who campaigned to stop Oldham building a library and art gallery in the 1880s.  The statue has her name cheekily engraved in bold letters on her back.

Have a look at the heads of notable writers, artists and engineers from the past along the top of the building.  They are all men.

Can you think of some famous women you could include in this section?
