John Costello ran one of several nationwide foundries commissioned to make the lamps for the Thames Embankment in London.
One of the lamps remained unused in John’s foundry and when he retired, the Chadderton-born ironworker donated it to Oldham Council.
You might think these are big fish rather than dolphins but long ago, people thought they were fish and if a knight had a dolphin on his shield it was drawn like this.
