Young people from Chadderton have created a new film celebrating their town and inspiring a wider conversation about its future.
Our Pride, Our Place, produced through Fullcircle nw CIC Youth Voice programme, showcases the people, places and stories that make Chadderton special. The film's release marks the start of a new phase of community engagement linked to Chadderton's £20 million Pride in Place programme.
Fullcircle nw CIC is a Chadderton-based community organisation that works with local people to create opportunities, strengthen communities and support residents to have a voice in the issues that matter to them. Through its Youth Voice programme, young people were involved in developing and creating the film, helping tell Chadderton's story through their own eyes.
The film captures what young people value about Chadderton today – from its strong sense of community and local identity to the people and places that make it unique. The Chadderton Neighbourhood Board now wants to build on those conversations by hearing from residents of all ages about what they would like to see happen next and how Pride in Place investment can support the ambitions for the town.
Rosie, aged 12, who helped create the film through Fullcircle's Youth Voice programme, said: “I learnt so much being apart of the film project, from camera skills, lighting and editing. It was nice to hear other people’s views on the area and see Chadderton from other people’s perspectives and hear their stories. I hope to do more projects like this through the Youth Voice group.”
The launch of the film comes as the Chadderton Neighbourhood Board begins a new phase of community engagement through the Pride in Place programme. Chadderton was selected by Government to receive up to £20 million of investment over the next decade, with local people helping to shape how that funding is used. The programme will support projects linked to public spaces, youth opportunities, heritage and culture, community safety and local business growth. A key principle of the programme is that decisions should be shaped by the people who live, work and spend time in Chadderton.
Neil Consterdine, Director of Communities at Oldham Council said: “It’s great to see Fullcircle nw CIC produce such a meaningful film showcasing young people sharing their views on the area. It’s fantastic that Chadderton has been chosen for this £20 million investment. It’s a huge milestone for the town, and what makes this especially exciting is that it’s about putting local people right at the heart of shaping Chadderton’s future.
"This film is a great example of what makes Chadderton so special, and I’d encourage everyone to get involved and share their ideas. Together, we can make this a really positive and inspiring chapter for the town.”
Rebecca Drake, Director of Fullcircle nw CIC and a member of the Chadderton Neighbourhood Board, said:
"This project was about giving young people the chance to tell Chadderton's story in their own way. Too often young people are talked about rather than listened to. Through this film they have shared what Chadderton means to them and highlighted the people, places and community spirit that make our town unique.
"What comes through so clearly is that there is already so much to be proud of in Chadderton. The young people involved have captured something really special about this place and the people who live here.
"As a member of the Chadderton Neighbourhood Board, I hope this film is just the start of a much bigger conversation. Pride in Place is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for our town and we want residents, businesses and community groups to help shape what comes next.
"We hope the film encourages people to reflect on what they love about Chadderton, share their ideas for the future and get involved in the conversation."
The Chadderton Neighbourhood Board will be seeking the views of Chadderton residents as their engagement with the community continues. Chadderton residents are being encouraged to visit the website and join the mailing list to have their say.
