Oldham’s year as Greater Manchester Town of Culture 2026/27 is now underway, following the launch at Festival Oldham on Saturday 30th May.
Thousands gathered in Oldham town centre to enjoy our free outdoor arts festival. The festival marked the beginning of an exciting year for Oldham, with events, exhibitions, performances and community-led activity set to take place right across the borough throughout 2026 and into 2027.
As part of the launch, we are inviting residents, artists and community groups to help shape the year ahead through a new round of Rising Up Micro Commissions.
Oldham was awarded Greater Manchester Town of Culture earlier this year following its successful Rising Up bid. The vision celebrates everything that makes Oldham unique, from its rich heritage and proud communities to its growing creative sector.
Through the Micro Commissions programme, we are looking for bold and creative ideas that reflect Oldham’s identity and bring people together. This could include performances, workshops, exhibitions, installations or new community projects. Successful applicants will receive funding and support to bring their ideas to life as part of the Town of Culture programme.
Neil Consterdine, Director of Communities at Oldham Council said: "Rising Up is about celebrating the creativity and community spirit that runs through Oldham. These Micro Commissions give local people the chance to share their ideas, tell their stories and be part of something special. We want as many people as possible to get involved and help shape this year together."
We are particularly keen to hear from projects that reach a broad range of residents and communities, helping to ensure the programme reflects the full diversity of the borough.
Grants of between £500 and £3,000 are available, with projects to be delivered by 31 March 2027. We encourage anyone with an idea to apply by Friday 3rd July 2026 via the online application form: Oldham – Rising Up Greater Manchester Town of Culture 2026 - Oldham HLA
The Town of Culture programme is built around three themes called Reach, Rise and Soar. It focuses on opening up arts and culture to more people, bringing activity into our neighbourhoods as well as our town centres, and creating a lasting legacy for future generations.
