Tributes have been paid to a former Mayor and popular Oldham Councillor who sadly passed away earlier this week.
Valerie Sedgwick, a dedicated member of the Liberal Democrat party, served as a Councillor from 1992-2016, in which time she served a term as Mayor of Oldham from 2003-2004.
Former Councillor Sedgwick, Councillor for Lees ward 1992 - 2004 and Saddleworth West and Lees ward 2004 – 2016, served on many committees of the Council including two years as Chair of the Licensing Committee.
During her time as Mayor, Valerie was fiercely dedicated to improving the Borough for residents of Oldham, as well as being a strong advocate for local charities and tackling anti-social behaviour.
Current Mayor of Oldham, Cllr Zahid Chauhan OBE, said: “This is very sad news and my sincere condolences go out to Val’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
“Val was a popular and empathetic colleague who was devoted to the people of Oldham, especially in her home village of Lees, of which she was so fond. Her loss will be greatly felt.”
Leader of Oldham Council, Cllr Arooj Shah, said: “Val served the Borough with such dedication and was so passionate about improving Lees and serving her community.”
"I am sure there will be many Oldhamers with fond memories of Val who would like to pay tribute in the coming days."
Councillor Howard Sykes MBE, Liberal Democrat Group Leader, said: “Val was Mrs Lees. By far one of the most popular councillors that I have ever worked with and a very valuable member of the Liberal Democrat Group.”
A book of condolence has been made available at the Civic Centre entrance, accessible from Rochdale Road.
The borough flag will be flown at half-mast on the day of her funeral, arrangements of which will be announced in due course.
