A space for businesses to grow and thrive was launched this week along with the announcement of social enterprise ambassador for Oldham Borough – the first role of its kind in Greater Manchester.

Both developments demonstrate further exciting progress in Oldham Council’s Creating a Better Place plan and coincided with Social Enterprise Day (Thursday 17 November) and Global Entrepreneurship Week.

The launch and announcement took place at a Social Enterprise Day event at Blue Tiffin Restaurant in Royton.

Cllr Amanda Chadderton, Leader of Oldham Council, said: “Oldham Borough has a strong entrepreneurial culture and is one of the top 10 most entrepreneurial towns in the UK – and we want to take advantage of that in a way that’s both exciting and inclusive.

“So, I’m delighted that we’ve launched the Hive today. It will be a place where entrepreneurs and social enterprises can have co-working space, collaborate and connect with work opportunities.

“It will be in the heart of our regenerated town centre and helps meet our ambition for enterprise. The Hive is a key part of achieving our ambition for better jobs and dynamic business.

“It is also great to have Anwar Ali on board as Social Enterprise Ambassador, with his OBE demonstrating his commitment to social enterprise in Oldham Borough.”

Creating a Better Place includes a vision for a sustainable and vibrant Oldham town centre for the future – a great place for shopping, working and socialising.

The Hive is scheduled to open in September 2023 and is set to be on the upper floor of the Spindles Town Square Shopping Centre, where major redevelopment work began in August.

Oldham-based entrepreneur, Anwar Ali OBE, has been announced as Social Enterprise Ambassador for Oldham.

Anwar, Managing Director of Upturn, a social enterprise based in Oldham, has been appointed as the social enterprise ambassador in recognition for his ongoing commitment and dedication to supporting the local community and economy.

As part of the role, Anwar will be working with all stakeholders, members of the Council to establish a thriving and diverse business community of social enterprises.

Anwar said: “I’m really proud to have been asked to support the work of Oldham Council as its social enterprise ambassador.

“I love the work we do within the local community, supporting business, innovating, and leading social change but I am most passionate about supporting and nurturing people with their careers, business skills and life aspirations.

“I’ve over 20 years of experience working with social enterprises and have a wealth of ideas on how we can support the people of Oldham, its communities and businesses.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to work with decision makers and help steer the future of how Oldham supports its home-grown talent and grows its economy. Together we can create an economy in Oldham that works for everyone.”
