The temporary new home of Royton Library has been officially opened.
The move to nearby Trinity Methodist Church, on Radcliffe Street is needed so work to transform Royton Town Hall and Library into a multi-use community hub can take place.
The project will breathe new life into the much-loved town hall and adjoining library to create a welcoming, family-friendly venue in the heart of the town.
The whole building will also benefit from the installation of additional sustainability and energy efficiency measures to reduce its carbon footprint, as part of our Green New Deal - an ambitious target of the council becoming carbon neutral by 2025 followed by the whole borough by 2030.
The work is expected to be completed later this year.
The temporary library was officially opened by the Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Jenny Harrison and Councillor Shaid Mushtaq, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills.
Residents of all ages popped along to join in the fun – one regular library user baked a cake for staff members with the words ‘Welcome to Royton Library at Trinity’ on it.
Cllr Mushtaq said: “Royton is one of the borough’s most popular libraries so it’s great we’ve been able to find a temporary home for it while we refurbish and upgrade Royton Town Hall.
“I’d like to thank our new landlords at Trinity Methodist Church for being so welcoming and finding room for us.
“Our new library will be open as soon as possible but, in the meantime, I’d urge residents to come along and make use of all that is on offer.”
Services include the popular rhyme time sessions on Tuesdays at 10am.
Architectural plans for the new development are on display currently at Trinity Methodist Church if you wish to see what works are due to take place.
Any new Royton library members that join in March will be entered into a prize draw where five lucky winners will receive £20 in book vouchers.
Returning library members, will be entered into a prize draw for a book hamper and Live@theLibrary tickets.
