The Role of the Early Years SENCo

The following document is intended as guidance for early years providers and practitioners to help clarify the role of the Early Years SENCO in non-maintained early years settings.

4+1 (short) Person centred review template

Suggested template with prompt questions to use when holding smaller reviews of a child’s progress. Use to begin to record family views (including concerns/worries) and setting staff views about a child’s progress and areas to develop.

Person Centred Review template

Individual Plan template

A suggested template to record small steps/outcomes for each child and for key workers to implement every day. Small targets in specific areas link to a child’s longer term outcomes which are identified in 4+1 mini reviews and full Person Centred Review meetings.

SEN Support Plan

All children with identified special educational needs and/or disabilities require an SEN support plan to be completed and reviewed in line with the child’s progress. Updates should include changes to strategies/child’s responses to interventions and to ensure up to date information is shared at key points e.g. transition to school or another setting, to request additional funding or to support a request for Education, Health Care Plan Needs Assessment.

Primary and Additional Need Guidance

The Department of Education (DfE) has a set of 13 primary need codes which give an understanding of the Special Educational Needs of a child. This documents supports SENDCo’s to record children’s primary and additional need accurately. This is in line with the Oldham Census guidance.
