We’re undertaking planned refurbishment works to the Manchester Street Flyover, to ensure it remains in service for many years.
Upcoming road closures
Lane closures will be in place over Manchester Street Flyover, for preliminary investigations for a planned full refurbishment of the structure.
These works are essential to collect the necessary information for the refurbishment of the flyover.
While we will try to keep disruption to a minimum, lane closures and speed restrictions will have to be implemented to keep our workforce safe.
- Start Date: 13th January 2025
- Completion Date: 20th February 2025
- Working hours: Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, with occasional weekend/night work
Temporary traffic controls and lane closures will be in place near the viaduct. Please follow all signage.
Pedestrian and vehicle access to businesses will be maintained at all times.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we undertake these essential works to ensure the safety and future functionality of the Manchester Street Flyover.

More about the project
We’re carrying out planned refurbishment works on Manchester Street Flyover to make sure the structure remains in service for years to come.
Delays can be expected during the works and we apologise for those in advance.
We’ll aim to carry out the work as quicky as possible.
- Pre-construction stage Ongoing
- Start date (on-site) Summer 2025
- End date (on-site) Autumn 2026
- Cost £6.5 million
The Manchester Street Viaduct is located at the A62 Oldham Way/Manchester Street roundabout, close to Oldham Town Centre.
It carries high traffic volumes and separates the key road network from local roads and key pedestrian, cyclist, and Metrolink routes, that are vital for Manchester and Rochdale connectivity.
The viaduct was constructed in the late 1970s and is now in a poor and deteriorating condition due to its age. It needs repair and improvement to extend its lifespan, to keep Oldham Way open, and to maintain the resilience and efficiency of the existing highway network.
The planned maintenance works include waterproofing, expansion joint replacement, concrete repairs, parapet refurbishment, and resurfacing.
Funding
The scheme is funded by the Department for Transport (DfT) City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) and Oldham Council. The CRSTS grant offer for the refurbishment of Manchester Street Viaduct is £4.5m. This will contribute to the overall scheme budget of £6.5m (£4.5m CRSTS grant plus £2m local highways maintenance contribution from Oldham Council)
