Dr Kershaw’s Hospice
Dr Kershaw’s Hospice provides a range of clinical specialist palliative care services for patients from across the borough with non-curable, life threatening illnesses, together with support and counselling for patients’ relatives and carers. The Hospice has a 24-hour telephone advice line, providing professional support for patients, carers, family and friends as well as health care professionals.
Action Oldham Fund
Action Oldham Fund changes local lives by supporting smaller voluntary and community groups across the borough. Grants are given to smaller volunteer-led organisations like older people’s luncheon clubs, mental health self-help groups, disability sports groups and disadvantaged younger people. These smaller groups enhance health and wellbeing, rebuild lives affected by poverty, crime, isolation or unemployment. Maggie’s Oldham provides free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their family and friends.
Maggie’s Oldham is a place where qualified experts provide emotional support and courses focused on getting started with cancer treatment and tips and techniques to adjusting to life after treatment has finished. Importantly, Maggie’s is a place to meet other people in similar situation to you or simply to sit quietly with a cup of tea at their kitchen table. Maggie’s Oldham is a really special place offering vital support to people affected by cancer.
Mental health is very much in the spotlight currently, more so than any other time. MIND offers information and advice to people with mental health problems. It also works to raise public awareness and understanding of issues relating to mental health.
St. Thomas’ Church, Werneth
St. Thomas’ Church, Werneth is raising funds to enable the community to make greater use of the building. A beautiful Grade II listed building, the changes will restore and improve the fabric of the building, and preserve its heritage. The church will become a place of learning, growth and support for all community. The church aims to work with St Thomas Werneth CE Primary in developing a range of activities for everyone in the community to include job clubs, training courses, parent and toddler groups, and to create a flexible and attractive space for church services and special occasions.
The Mayor is aware that during his year of office he will visit organisations within the borough whose needs become apparent to him at that time. He therefore wishes to reserve part of his charity total for those charities for whom a donation will make a big difference.
