Stoneleigh Park was officially opened in 1938 and covers approximately 23 acres. At the time, it was the largest area of public open space to be opened in the borough.

In 1997 the council began refurbishment works, leading to the park’s reopening in May 1998, which included the Tulip Fun Day event.

Further improvements have included floodlighting, new sports pitches, a trim trail and youth shelters.

Today the park is central to the Oldham community, offering a wide range of outdoor facilities while also providing a peaceful space for relaxation.

Let's go for a walk

Green Walk

Enter the park from Buxted Road through the gates near the flagpole. Walk down towards the sports area where basketball, tennis and five-a-side football are played.

On the left is a sunken garden containing a variety of plants designed to stimulate the senses.

Follow the path towards the children’s play area, then bear left towards the rugby field. At this point, the park opens out, providing a wildlife corridor into the Beal Valley.

Stoneleigh Academy is located to the right. Continue along the sandstone path around the rugby and football fields.

You will pass near the Metrolink line before heading back towards the play area. Continue alongside a small group of trees where birds are often seen.

Cross the grass towards the bowling green, then turn right onto the tarmac path which leads back to the starting point.
