Chadderton Hall Park opened on 19 May 1956 on the former site of Chadderton Hall. The 6.47 hectare park was purchased by the council in 1935 and has links to Tandle Hill Country Park, Irk Valley and Rochdale Canal.
The park includes a children’s play area, tennis courts, multi-games area, picnic site, woodland walkway and a café.
The park sits in a natural bowl shape, with grass fields at the lowest point and higher ground surrounding them. This reflects both the natural valley of the River Irk and the site’s former use as a lake.
Chadderton Hall dates back to the 13th century when it was first built by Geoffrey de Chadderton. A later hall was built in 1629 on the current site and remained until it was demolished in the 20th century.
By the late 19th century, the grounds were used for public recreation, including a boating lake and even a menagerie with animals such as a lion, kangaroo and monkeys.
Interesting fact
Elephant bones have been discovered in the park, dating back to when a zoo existed here over 100 years ago. Other animals once kept here included crocodiles, bears, monkeys and a lion called Chang.
