Coronavirus: Information and advice

When you buy goods or services the law gives you consumer rights which protect you from being treated unfairly by a trader.

Consumer Advice

Visit the Citizens Advice website for information that can help solve legal, money and other problems.

Find a trustworthy business - 'Buy with Confidence'

The Buy With Confidence Scheme is approved by Trading Standards as a facility for consumers to gain access to
trustworthy, registered businesses.

Recall notices

Visit the Trading Standards Institute for information about recalled items.

Door step callers - 'if you want them to go, just say no!'

Many traders who call at your door are honest and genuine. However, some are not and can be extremely persuasive.

Examples of bad practices associated with cold calling and doorstep selling include:

  • Pressure selling
  • Unfair contracts
  • Overpriced or substandard home maintenance or improvements
  • Phoney consumer surveys
  • Bogus charity collections.

You have a legal right to say no and should not feel pressured into buying goods or services or inviting a stranger into your home.
