If you are aged between 40-74 make sure you have your NHS Health Check as it will detect and help prevent:

  • heart disease
  • stroke
  • diabetes
  • kidney disease
  • certain types of dementia

How to get your NHS Health Check

If you're in the 40-74 age group without a pre-existing condition, you can expect to receive a letter from your GP or pharmacy inviting you for a free NHS Health Check.

Don't worry if you haven't got your invitation yet, as you will be invited for one over the next few years.

Once you have had your first health check you will then be invited for an NHS Health Check every 5 years, as long as you don’t have one of the above health conditions.

What happens at your NHS Health Check

When you have your NHS Health Check you will get an overall score that you can keep track of and seek to improve over time.

You may also get information about your “heart age” – this is the age, based on your physical health that your heart is similar to.

It may be very different to your actual age.

There are three important parts of your NHS Health Check that you should know and, from time to time, monitor:

  • Blood pressure
  • BMI
  • Cholesterol level

Your GP will chat to you and discuss your results.

You'll be given advice and support to maintain or improve your overall health.

Maintaining your health and wellbeing

There are a wide range of resources available in our communities to help you to improve or maintain your health and wellbeing.

We believe that sometimes the best medicine is to use your community facilities and activities such as support groups, physical activity and sport.

We also want to reduce isolation and loneliness by connecting people to each other, helping everyone to enjoy all the community has to offer.

If you are worried about any aspect of your health please see your GP.
