Iron railings
When the turnpike road we know as Yorkshire Street was created about 1795, there was a large rock outcrop here that needed quarrying away, leaving the drop.
There have been a few sets of iron railings over the years, but these were cast in 1870 as a small plaque at the High Street end confirms. The railings are often referred to locally as “Th’ ir’n railings”.
