Holocaust Memorial Day

Holocaust Memoral Day A short service in Royton Park to remember all those who suffered in the Holocaust and in subsequent genocides.

Holocaust Memorial Day is a national commemoration day in the United Kingdom dedicated to the remembrance of those who suffered in The Holocaust, under Nazi Persecution, and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. It was first held in January 2001 and has been on the same date every year since. The chosen date is the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp by the Soviet Union in 1945, the date also chosen for the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and some other national Holocaust Memorial Days.

A short service in Shaw to remember all victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides.

Schedule

11:30am – arrival

11:45am – 1:30pm – HMD commemoration

The event will be opened by The Worshipful, The Mayor of Oldham, Cllr Derek Heffernan

Followed by:

Presentations and reflections by pupils from Blessed John Henry Newman RC College and its feeder primary schools.

The event has been planned in partnership with Oldham Council, Blessed John Henry Newman RC College and Oldham Interfaith Forum. Refreshments will be available.

Holocaust Memorial Peace Vigil

Saddleworth Peace Group will hold its annual Peace Vigil to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on Saturday, January 28 2017.

The Major of Oldham, Councillor Derek Heffernan, will speak at the event, and it is expected that he will be joined by local MP Debbie Abrahams.

They will be joined by local teenagers who will speak about what Holocaust Memorial Day means to them today. A silent vigil will follow.

As has become traditional the event will take place outside the Methodist Church in Uppermill Square between 12noon and 12.30pm.

The event will continue in the Methodist Church coffee lounge with light refreshments. All are welcome to attend.
