Getting Oldham active in 2017
To mark the start of 2017 Oldham Council asked residents to share their “healthy selfies” – and we’ve picked our favourite.
This year Oldham Council once again provided a helping hand to residents, supporting them to achieve their resolutions with the annual New Year, New You campaign #NYNU17.
Residents were asked, while out and about being healthy, to take a picture and send it in using the hashtag #healthyselfieOldham with a variety of prizes on offer.
At the end of the month, our favourite healthy selfie was picked and given a year’s pass for Oldham Community Leisure (OCL).
Ricky McLeary (48), from Shaw, was named the overall winner with a picture of him training for his first London Marathon on April 23.
Ricky said: “Being able to use the facilities at OCL will help me so much especially with the unpredictable bad weather.
“I am running in aid of Macmillan Cancer Trust, a very worthy charity. If anyone would like to sponsor me and help raise more money for Macmillan.”

#healthyselfieOldham runners up were Suzie Redpath and Aaron Thorpe. They both won a week’s OCL pass.
Cllr Eddie Moores, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “We had a fantastic response to our #healthyselfieOldham competition and it was fantastic to see so many Oldhamers out and about staying active.
“We have excellent state of the art facilities in Oldham for anyone who enjoys sport of wants to stay in shape.”
Stuart Lockwood, Chief Executive of Oldham Community Leisure, said: “The competition was a great way for people to demonstrate the alternative approaches to improving your health and activity levels.
“The key to a healthier lifestyle is to make habits you can stick to, that’s why at OCL we are always looking at broadening the benefits of our memberships which now include running groups, badminton, Nordic walking as well as various discounts within our centres.
“Ricky’s marathon is clearly helping his focus at the moment and hopefully, with the membership, he’ll maintain a healthy lifestyle going forward.”
