Oldham Council is pleased to announce good news for commuters and shoppers - the free Metroshuttle bus service is set to stay until Metrolink arrives in the Town Centre.

The Metroshuttle bus is low-floor and easy access and will serve a range of locations in the town centre – enabling passengers to access the bus as often as they want.

The service – funded by Oldham Council and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) – undertakes a circular 2.7-mile roundtrip every 20 minutes.

It is free of charge to all passengers and runs seven days a week - the first bus leaves Mumps at 9.38am, with last service finishing at Mumps at 4.36pm.

Councillor Dave Hibbert, Cabinet Member for Housing, Transport and Planning, said: “We originally introduced the service after talking to residents, tram users and traders and listening to their views that that there was a need for some kind of shuttle bus service that can help people get from and to the station and around key town centre sites.

“The service has been particularly useful for people unable to walk any great distance, for example, and has also helped visitors who are visiting the town for the first time as they can access as often as they wish.

“This extension of the Metroshuttle bus is good news for everyone as it has been a success since it was introduced and I’m sure it will remain to be well used until Metrolink arrives in the town centre next year.”

Councillor Andrew Fender, Chair of the Transport for Greater Manchester Committee, said: “This is very good news for the thousands of people who are using the Metrolink service to get to and from Oldham .

“Metrolink will call at both Oldham and Rochdale town centres when new stops open next year. In the meantime, it’s great news that people will be able to continue using the Metroshuttle to get into and around Oldham town centre easily.”

The Metroshuttle route starts at Victoria Street – better known as the car parking and pick-up/drop off area adjacent to the new Metrolink stop at Oldham Mumps.

It then goes up Oldham Way (A62) and onto its first stop at King Street , via the roundabout. It next turns up West Street to visit Oldham Bus Station.

After exiting onto St Mary’s Way, the service stops on Lord Street before making two further stops on Yorkshire Street and one on Lees Road on its return journey back to Mumps.

The Metroshuttle bus service is run by Manchester Community Transport.
