Recycling rate up Published: Friday, 26th May 2023

Oldham Council would like to say a big thank you to residents for helping to drive up our household recycling rate by nearly ten per cent – the fourth highest improvement in the country.

The borough’s recycling rate is now at 46.5 per cent after it climbed 9.8 per cent.

That’s higher than the national average for 2021/22 of 44 per cent.

The figures were recently announced by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Councillor Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, said: “This is great news and one of the main reasons for the improved performance is residents doing their bit and recycling better.

“Their efforts – and the great work of our bin crews – are helping with our aim to become the greenest borough in Greater Manchester, something which I’ve identified as a priority for the council.

“Like a lot of councils our household recycling rates decreased during the pandemic due to more people being at home and changes to collections for safety reasons.

“But our rate has bounced back, and we are proud of it.

“We can get it even higher. Every day our crews find waste and recycling in the wrong bins so please make sure you put it in the right one.”

If you have any unwanted bulky or large household items that you want picking up, then collections can be booked via Bulky Bob’s on 0161 770 6644. Charges apply.

By using this service your furniture could be donated to a family in need.

If you use other waste carriers check they have a licence because unfortunately, in some cases, unwanted good are found dumped.

If that happens then you could be facing a fine or a court appearance. Check licences at https://environment.data.gov.uk/public-register/view/index

Waste and recycling can also be disposed at Arkwright Street Household Waste and Recycling Centre seven days a week.
