The bitterness of winter has been felt more than ever by households this year due to rising energy prices.
In an effort to combat freezing temperatures, some people have worn an extra layer of clothing or have even stayed in bed just to keep warm because they fear what the cost may be if they adjust their thermostat.
But thanks to the generosity of several community groups in Oldham and support from the council, there are a number of warm spaces people can visit to stay warm at no cost.
One of these spaces – now more commonly referred to as Warm Banks – is the Salvation Army’s warm space at The Brew in Fitton Hill.
Throughout the week, residents can take advantage of this warm environment by enjoying a hot drink and board games alongside access to computers and general advice.
The space is open on Monday (9am-3pm), Tuesday (12-3pm), Wednesday (12-5pm) and Friday (9am-3pm).
Graham Rogers from the Salvation Army, said: “Energy bills continue to be a cause of great anxiety for many people in our community – so much so, people dare not turn the heating on because of the associated costs.
“Money is extremely tight and in the worse cases we’ve had people come to us who have had no gas or electricity for days, which is extremely worrying.
“But we are here to help, and our warm friendly environment is open to everyone so please visit us if you can’t keep warm at home.”
Speaking six months of from the launch of the council's We Can Help Campaign, Councillor Amanda Chadderton, Leader of Oldham Council, added: "Warm Banks should not be necessary in this day and age.
“But the cost of energy is unaffordable for many and without this additional support from the local community, alongside the council’s warm spaces, people would be cold in their own homes.
“Winter may nearly be over, but these spaces are still a vital lifeline for people, so if you are struggling with rising energy costs and cannot afford to heat your home , please contact the council’s helpline as we can support you in getting vouchers for gas and electricity as well as further help in your current situation.”
