Our Don’t Trash Oldham campaign continues to improve communities daily.
We are now just over six months into the initiative and residents are telling us the borough-wide initiative is making a positive impact.
Councillor Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, said: “When I became council leader in May last year, I prioritised putting more staff and funding into cleaning up our borough and taking action against those who treat it like a tip.
“We did this because residents told us they wanted us to do it.
“All these extra resources are on top of what our staff do every day in all weathers.
“Since we started Don’t Trash Oldham in September one of the most pleasing aspects we’ve seen is how residents, councillors schools and our partners, such as housing associations and the police, are supporting Don’t Trash Oldham.
“I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone involved.
“We know there is work to be done and that’s why we plan to continue the campaign next year too, at a cost of around a million pounds a year.”
This month our teams are busy cleaning up South Chadderton and Werneth.
Since September our staff have cleared up more than 144 tonnes of litter, rubbish, fly-tipping and overgrown shrubs – that’s more than a Blue Whale
We’ve cleaned 1,755 streets and 292 alleys.
Our engagement team have knocked on more than 18,000 doors letting people know about the campaign.
Our enforcement teams have also handed out 301 fines to those who think it’s ok to leave rubbish where they want.
Cllr Shah added: “Unfortunately we know criminals will continue to fly-tip and dump rubbish in the borough.
“That’s why campaigns like Don’t Trash Oldham and the Great British Spring Clean, which the council is supporting, are important.
“If residents and businesses continue to support us, look after their communities and report those who are blighting them, we can make a real difference.”
