Sean Fielding, Leader of Oldham Council said:
“Over the last few days we’ve made a clear argument that an economic lockdown was not the answer for Oldham.
“Instead we put forward a strong case to government for a different approach – one where we increase testing, use our powers to drive compliance and enforcement among those not currently following guidelines and carry out intensive door to door engagement in areas with higher cases.
“Today we welcome the announcement that Oldham will not face business closures. Instead, we agreed a small number of additional measures that we believe will help reduce the spread of the virus including, tighter restrictions on household mixing, fewer attendees at funerals and weddings, and advising that public transport only be used for essential travel.
“We continue to work hard to tackle coronavirus in Oldham – to save not only lives, but jobs and businesses too.”
