The Local Authority is aware that as a result of the recent Council Cabinet meeting, there has been media coverage regarding Newman school.
The media coverage has taken the Cabinet’s discussion out of context and the Local Authority would like to apologise for any concern that occurred and to clarify the following:
The Local Authority would not allow a school to open if it was concerned regarding the safety of the students and teachers at that school. Parents, teachers and students can be reassured that the school is safe.
There is an ongoing legal process between contractors, who are responsible for dealing with the heating issues at Newman College and this process is due to conclude soon.
The contractors have been told by the Local Authority that they must take responsibility for the ongoing heating issues and a list of actions they must undertake has been communicated to them. They have started some of this work before Christmas.
In the event that contractors are not forthcoming in their responsibilities, the Local Authority is working on a contingency plan, should it be needed, that will resolve the heating system issues.
The Local Authority can also clarify that Newman school is a voluntary aided school and not an academy.
Oldham Council Cabinet Member for Education and Skills Cllr Shaid Mushtaq said: “I would firstly like to apologise if reports caused any concern and I am assured that the school is safe. Our focus has been, and will continue to be, in supporting the school in order to remedy the problems they are having with the contractor and the heating system.
"The Cabinet decision was a positive show of support and indicates that the Local Authority will do all it can in order to support the school”.
