Extra Care Housing supports people to live independently in their own homes within a Community setting.

The schemes consist of self-contained apartments, and communal space and support services designed to support people to live independently.

Staff are on site 24 hours a day, this can vary from either a scheme Manager, Concierge and/or care staff.

Extra Care Housing gives you support, security and privacy to live in your own home, with daily activities and services on site that help you to stay well and continue to live independently.

Benefits

  • Care staff are available 24 hours a day to provide care and support, either via on-site staff 7 am to 11 pm or via the Helpline and Response who will respond to emergency needs outside of these hours. There are also Concierges on site at nights who support security of the scheme and will signpost to other services if they are needed to help.
  • You have security and privacy with your own front door – you decide who comes in.
  • You have your own self-contained accommodation, but can also benefit from communal facilities, for example – shared lounge, restaurant and dining room. Some have patios and gardens that tenants can use and enjoy.
  • You will have a council tenancy agreement.
  • Couples can stay together in Extra Care.
  • You have control over your finances.
  • Staff are there to support activities each day, and a tenants representative and the court staff will help ensure your views on how the scheme helps support everyone are heard.
  • You are living at home – not in a home!

How do I qualify for Extra Care Housing?

  • You need care/support services identified by Adult Services following a care assessment.
  • You must be a resident or have connections to Oldham
  • Tenants are usually older people over 60 years old, but there are some exceptions to this.

How is Extra Care Housing different to ordinary sheltered housing?

You have the added benefit of care/support or security staff available 24 hours a day, either on the premises or on call. The care staff are available from 7-11 during the day and the Security at night are available 11-7 each night. Scheme managers are there during working hours.

Living with a partner

You can move in together but you’re likely to be issued a fixed term tenancy, which will be reviewed every few years to ensure we are still able to meet your needs and the needs of your partner.

Your family and friends can visit and help you as before, with the added support of the on-site care and support staff.

Changing circumstances

Your needs may change over time, and so your care needs will be reassessed on a regular basis.

The care staff will be as flexible as possible to help meet your individual needs.

The step-up and step-down care available for up to two weeks, means that care packages can have a temporary increase if needed, and flexed down as needs change.

Although where there is a permanent change the needs of the tenant will be reviewed by Care Management.

How long can I live there?

Extra Care Housing aims to provide those with care and support needs with a home for life, as long as the care staff are able to meet your needs, and the housing offer is suitable for your needs.

For example, if you enter Extra Care with a partner who has care needs, and you do not; you will be offered a Fixed Term Tenancy that will be reviewed every few years to ascertain whether the property is still suitable to meet your needs.

As Extra Care is a valuable service; we will be asking those who no longer require Extra Care as their circumstances have changed and they have no or low care needs to consider a move to more suitable accommodation.

Cost

The amount you pay for your care will vary depending on your individual financial situation. A financial assessment will be carried out and you may have to pay for all the costs, or you may be entitled to a reduction.

We can arrange for someone from the Council to visit and discuss confidentially your financial situation. They will let you know what the charges will be and will check to see what benefits you are entitled to claim.

If your care and support needs or income change then your care charges may increase or decrease.

Pets

Pets are currently not allowed within our Extra Care schemes.
