2. What happens if I don’t pay?

Your Council Tax bill will show how much you need to pay. If you don’t pay the amount by the date requested:

  1. You will receive a reminder notice
  • If you miss a Council Tax instalment, or pay the amount requested later than the date shown on your bill, you will receive a reminder notice. This notice will give you seven days to bring your payments up to date.
  • If you don’t pay within this time, you will be asked to pay the full outstanding balance. Failure at this stage to pay the full amount requested may result in recovery costs being added to your account.
  1. You may receive a second reminder notice
  • If you miss a second Council Tax instalment, or pay the amount requested later than the date shown on your bill for a second time, you will receive a second reminder. This notice will give you seven days to bring your payments up to date.
  • If you don’t pay within this time, you will be asked to pay the full outstanding balance. Failure at this stage to pay the full amount requested may result in recovery costs being added to your account.
  • You will only receive two reminders in one financial year. A third missed or late payment will result in a final notice being issued meaning that the full outstanding balance is due.
  1. You may receive a final notice
  • If you miss a Council Tax instalment for the third time, or pay the amount requested later than the date shown on your bill you will receive a final notice. This notice will tell you that your right to pay by instalments has been withdrawn.
  • You will be asked to pay the full outstanding balance within seven days. Failure at this stage to pay the full amount requested may result in recovery costs being added to your account.
  1. You will receive a summons
  • If you don’t pay your Council Tax instalments in line with the notices sent to you, you will receive a magistrate’s court summons.
  • If you receive a summons you will be charged £72.50 in court costs.
