Naming ceremonies

A naming ceremony is a formal, non-religious event when family, guardians and friends welcome a child into the family.

A naming ceremony is not for changing a child’s name.

The naming certificate will not have any legal status and is not suitable for identification.

Where can a naming ceremony be held?

  • The Register Office
  • A public building
  • Not a religious building or church

Times to be arranged with the celebrant.

Arrange a naming ceremony

Contact the Register Office to make an appointment with a celebrant.

You will be able to discuss readings and music with the celebrant at your appointment.

What to bring

  • A birth certificate or adoption certificate
  • Two people to declare support and make promises to your child during the ceremony

At the ceremony

Parents and grandparents can make promises to each other.

Parents can present a gift to the child.

You can take photos and video during the ceremony.

At the end the celebrant can add good wishes from absent guests.

At the end a certificate is signed by parents and guardians and presented to the family.
