With the right support and motivation you can make small changes to improve your health.

Be sugar smart

Did you know there are seven sugar cubes in a can of fizzy drink, five in a muffin and eight in a bowl of ice cream.

By swapping sugary drinks for water or milk and keeping fruit juices and other sugary drinks and snacks to mealtimes only, you’ll be reducing their risk of diseases like child obesity and tooth decay.

Move more

Fitting some physical activity into your day is easier than you think. You don’t have to be a gym addict or a marathon runner to be active.

Being active is really good for your body, mind and health – and there are lots of easy ways you and your family can get moving.

Your local leisure centre has a range of activities for people of all abilities. From swimming to yoga, and aerobics to gym sessions, there’s something for everyone.


It's important to know how much you are drinking and the easy ways you can cut back.

If you regularly drink above the lower risk guidelines, cutting back on alcohol can help your general wellbeing. Once you start cutting back, you'll probably notice the benefits. The biggest benefit is the reduced risk to your health, but there are lots of others, too.

Dry January 

January is also a popular time to detox after the Christmas festivities. Dry January gives your body a break and brings with it great health benefits such as; lower blood sugar, lower blood pressure, improved sleep, losing weight and feeling more energised. You can really boost your mental wellbeing by spending time with family and friends and discovering new things.

From live theatre, famous author visits to storytelling sessions and family learning, there’s something for everyone at your local library.

With four main exhibition spaces as well as events, talks and popular family activities, there’s so much to see at Gallery Oldham.

We’re lucky to have more than 30 parks and greenspaces, many of which have planned routes for you to follow as part of our healthy “Let’s go for a walk” programme.

For our youngest residents, there are lots of activities at your local children’s centre, come along and join in the fun

Boost your self-esteem by achieving those personal goals you may have been putting off like learning a new skill or finding a new career.

Our Lifelong Learning Service has a wide range of courses from helping you back to work to career advancement qualifications through to foreign languages.

There are also a variety of family learning opportunities such as family arts and crafts.

Each resident who signs up will receive a service tailored to meet their needs and helping them to climb up the career ladder.

Free childcare
