Greater Manchester Energy Smart Homes Project

The Greater Manchester Energy Smart Homes Project is looking into the potential for large scale retrofitting of low carbon measures in hard-to-treat residential properties.

 

The project is funded by the European Development Fund and is a partnership between Greater Manchester housing providers, local authorities, procurement organisations, the Energy Saving Trust, National Housing Federation and Envirolink NW.

The project is made up of several activities.

Energy Smart Homes Activities

'Wimpey No-fines' insulation

  • Area: Manchester
  • Lead organisation: Northwards Housing

This project will extend the scope of an insulation upgrade programme for hard-to-treat ‘Wimpey No-fines’ properties built in the 1950s.

The properties have a solid outer wall which is impossible to insulate using conventional techniques, and has very poor thermal performance by modern standards.

Northwards Housing’s refurbishment programmes will extend to allow 758 properties to be over-clad with a high-performance insulation system.

Solid wall insulation to multi-storey block

  • Area: East Manchester
  • Lead organisation: Eastlands Homes

This project will significantly extend the scope of an insulation upgrade programme for hard-to-treat concrete tower blocks with a solid outer wall.

The concrete tower blocks are impossible to insulate using conventional techniques and have very poor thermal performance by modern standards. Eastlands Homes over-clad a high-performance insulation system to 70 homes.

Cavendish Mill community heating network

  • Area: Tameside
  • Lead organisation: New Charter Housing

Cavendish Mill is a converted mill in Ashton Town Centre with 159 apartments.

The apartments are heated by individual electric heating systems which are expensive to operate and have high CO2 emissions.

The heating system will be upgraded to a biomass-fired combined heat and power system with supplementary solar thermal technology to take advantage of the roof space.

Awareness and behavioural change

  • Area: Greater Manchester

This project will help occupants of the improved properties to be able to take advantage of the upgrades that have been carried out on their homes.
