How do you identify special educational needs and disabilities?At Diggle Day Nursery each child has a designated key person, their role is to develop trusting sensitive relationships with parents and children to enable respectful sharing of information. If a parent has concerns about their child's development they can discuss this with the SENCO (Joanne/Julie) or Stacey Hesford the Manager. Through ongoing observational assessments at key stages such as on entry, 2-year check, and transition to school also termly child development is assessed by conducting a chap document which is a summary of learning to identify whether your child is working within their expected age of development.
How do you involve parents/carers?On entry parents are required to provide indepth information on their child in order to establish where the children are starting their learning with us, including any reports from health visitors/health care professionals or speech and language therapists. Termly, reports are shared and parents can comment and include information where possible. If any areas are identified as requiring additional actions, parents and carers will work together to implement and meet the child's needs.
How do you support a child’s learning and development?Before starting at Diggle Day Nursery we will invite the child and parent to attend one or more taster sessions according to the child's needs and will be given a parents welcome pack. The pack will contain a personal profile to complete about your child. This will help us to share information about your child's strengths and needs. Planning is based on children's individual needs and interests. The nursery SENCO will explain how children's individual needs can be met by planning support using a person centred approach. Person centred approaches are about listening, sharing, and acting upon what is required. Person Centred planning can be used to bring everyone together to find the right route to best support your child's learning and development.
How do you meet a child’s educational needs?Your childs key person and our nursery SENCO will work together to make sure that the environment, routines and acitivities support your childs needs, to they will communicate with the rest of the staff to provide consistency and understand within our team. Our practitioners are welcoming and friendly providing an inclusive sensitive and positive approach. They provide good role models for positive behaviour and are consistent in the day to day care of all our children. We are flexible in our routines to provide a positive environment for your children's needs and provide personal care such as nappy changing. Personal health plans can be adopted if necessary and staff will be trained in giving the appropriate medication for the child if required. Should your child require regular medication, then parents are required to complete and sign a medication permission form and you will be informed of the administration of the medicine and be asked to sign the form in accordance with our medicine policy.
How do we know my child is achieving agreed outcomes?Assesments systems are in place such as the 2 year progress review, under 3's next steps, and over 3's next steps which are all linked to the EYFS ages and stages of development. Parents helper sessions allow you to stay and help and see how your child is developing in the settling. If your child is requiring additional support, the next steps are shared between all professionals involved through scheduled meetings in a comfortable informal fashion. Plans will be reviewed to make sure strategies that are currently in place are working effectively.
How do you adapt for a child with extra needs?Activities will be adapted to ensure your child is able to interact fully will the environment and visual strategies such as a visual timetable is used to help them understand our routines. Our book areas are welcoming and provide a quiet area to retreat to if your child is tired or needs some quiet time.
How accessible is your service, outside and inside?All internal and external doors are wheelchair acessible with a downstairs toilet catered for wheelchair use. Outdoors can be accessed through the preschool room with 3 large doors with a sloping ramp on each. The nursery is predominantly on one level, with all the main based rooms on the ground floor. Furniture is child size accessible to all children.
How do you involve children in outings and trips?All visits or trips would be planned in order to include all of our children, we will endevour to include parent/carers in the planning of the visit off site to indentify the needs of your child. All parents are invited to join us on our trip. All risk assessments would be carried out prior to the visit. We would also take along any aids or medication for your child as identified.
How do you work with other organisations?Staff will seek out any external agencies required to support children's development with SEND. Parents are advised to speak to any health visitors or GP in all instances. Staff will communicate fully with all professionals in order to meet the needs of the child. Meetings are held at the nursery and all needs of the family are met as required.
How do you support children when they start and leave?The nursery offers one or more settling in sessions for you and your child prior to your childs start date when there will be an opportunity to discuss any requirements. These sessions give us the chance to get to know you and your family and provides the opportunity for you to share with us details of your child's needs and the involvement of other agencies and to agree with you a consistent approach to ensure the continuity of care for your child. We offer a flexible settling in period should your child have difficulties settling in. When transferring to another setting or moving on to school, the nursery will invite the key person/teacher and SENCO to attend your child's sessions at nursery to help them become familiar with them and to discuss your child's strengths an needs. Staff and children can make visits to the local school. The teachers can also come to the setting and interact with the children on site. Your child's learning journeys and any other information that may be relevant to your child, will be passed on to the new setting giving them the time to make necessary plans for any changes they may need to make. Transitions are completed with an attached summary of learning.
How are you/staff trained in extra needs?Diggle Day Nursery staff have accessed child development training and have experience working with the early years age group. All have a first aid qualification and some members of staff have attended communication and language training (Every child's a talker, ELKLAN) We have two SENCO trained staff members who keep this qualification current at all times. Within our staff team we have a broad range of experienced staff that supports all children's needs and have attended a range of courses. Staff meetings keep all staff aware of current legislation and training. Further training will be sought and accessed to support any identified needs.
What is your policy on compliments, complaints, concerns?We ensure that all parents and carers are listened to a valued at all times. We have an open door policy that encourages all comments and complaints to be dealt with face to face. We have strong policies and procedures in place to support our practice and these can be viewed by all staff, parents, and carers. Parents regularly keep us informed through a parents comments book and questionnaires which are reviewed and acted upon where necessary. Any issues are dealt with promptly and appropriately.
