How do you identify special educational needs and disabilities?

At Golden Petals Pre-school we make sure we identify Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) at an earliest stage. The first stage when a child starts the key person and parents/carers discuss the child’s baseline assessment or 2 years assessment. This baseline / 2 years assessment is done within 4 weeks or depending on the child. Sometimes we may need more time to observe the child. After, this stage we draw up some next steps and review it closely. If, we do not see any changes, we log everything on a document called “Early support log”. We put strategies into place for the child to meet their full potential. If we have noticed no improvements have been made. We call the parents/carers in for a meeting and discuss the steps we need to take to support their child. Once, we have got an approval from parents/carers we work closely with multi professionals and refer this matter to the relevant professionals. Once, we have liaised with SEND professionals, we carry out (Individual education plan) IEP meetings with all the professionals, including parents/carers. We discuss about the child’s likes/dislikes and implement 4 plus one and individual plans to meet the child’s targets.

How do you involve parents/carers?

Parents/carers are closely involved throughout the SEND process. We ask parents/carers what concerns and difficulties they are facing. Also, we keep parents/carers involved in their child’s individual planning and next steps. Educating them with The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. Informing them about the areas of development and the expected age development. Have regular meetings to discuss the individual needs of the child and informing them about SEND. Once, parents/carers have given authorisation to gain some support with relevant professionals we make the referral. We make sure we have this documented and give a copy to parents/carers.

How do you support a child’s learning and development?

We will help by involving parents/carers in their child’s learning. This will be demonstrated in many ways. Such as, Tapestry. This is an online journal for parents/carers to look at what their child is doing in the setting and how it is related to The Early Years Foundation Stage and characteristics of effective learning. Also, uploading pictures and messages to get you included in your child’s learning journey. Furthermore, termly meeting with parents/carers to discuss their child’s strengths and weaknesses. However, we offer many learning and development strategies which will support children with SEND. Some of these are, object reference, visual timetable, now and next boards. Through these activities it will support children with SEND to become familiar with the daily routine and give them a clear understanding of what is happening.

How do you meet a child’s educational needs?

We will ensure your child’s educational needs are met by assessing your child. This may lead on to training staff, having the right resources, and liaising with the multi professional team. Always making sure you are a part of each step we take. Furthermore, we have a SEND policy in place for staff to refer to and making sure all needs of the child are met.

How do we know my child is achieving agreed outcomes?

We will have meetings where strategies are discussed, looked closely into, ensuring the child is achieving their best ability. Next steps will be put into place for your child to achieve the agreed outcomes. Additionally, through daily observations, reviewing individual targets and evaluating the effectiveness of the provision.

How do you adapt for a child with extra needs?

At Golden Petals Pre-school we have a clear and calm approach in adapting for SEND. We will observe what activities your child needs to enhance their learning development. From this we will adapt activities around your child, making them feel comfortable and feel the same as the rest. In addition, we will purchase resources that will support your child’s development needs and which will benefit them. Also, by supporting the child with 1:1 ration, helping them with the extra care and attention to achieve the required task and recognise their achievement.

How accessible is your service, outside and inside?

The setting is all on 1 floor level and can adjust any equipment the child has. For example, walking frame or wheelchair. Indoor environment is colourful and eye catching. Full of resources and age-appropriate activities. Outdoor provision is rich and stimulating. We will set up activities in line with The Early Years Foundation Stage. However, we are based in a good location where there is a lot to explore. Such as, mosque, church, local park, dentist, bakery, hairdressers etc. There is an easy access to indoors and outdoors.

How do you involve children in outings and trips?

Risk assessments will always be carried out when carrying out an outdoor activity. We will assess the situation and make sure we make it accessible for your child. For example, if we decide to go on a nature walk. If your child is on a wheelchair, we will have one member of staff assisting your child and involve them in the learning activity. Also, invite parents/carers to join along with us. Parents/carers requests are met if there is any other additional arrangements to be made.

How do you work with other organisations?

We carry out an effective communication system with external agencies to inform them on what we are doing in the setting to support SEND children. This is carried out by emails, face to face meetings and trainings. We also update them with relevant changes and share much information as possible. IEP meeting will be undertaken every 4-6 weeks.

How do you support children when they start and leave?

As a child starts with us, we have a set procedure that we follow. First, we enrol the child into the setting by inviting parents/carers in and filling in an enrolment form, with certain evidence. Such as, birth certificate, medical/allergy condition, health visitor’s information and the child’s likes and dislikes. Going off what the parents/carers have told us, we plan according to the child’s likes. The child and parents/carers are invited for an initial visit. This is when the parent/carer stays for 1 hour with the child in the setting and helping them to settle in with their choice of activities. This will support them to settle as it is a new environment, new faces of practitioners, and peers. At a steady pace depending on each child, we will take small steps and allow the child to stay without the parent. If a child decides to leave, we carry out a transition report. This will be discussed with parents/carers before we send it to the new setting. Also, they key worker will add some additional comments on how the child is and if the child needs some extra support transitioning into the new setting.

How are you/staff trained in extra needs?

All staff attend regular trainings hosted by the early years team or Noodle training group, to boost their knowledge and skills around SEND. However, training is delivered in house and discuss SEND in staff meeting and make sure each staff is aware of the individual needs and is supported to work alongside SEND children. Also, all staff have a Paediatric First Aid qualification, which is updated every 3 years and are aware of the procedure to take when needed.

What is your policy on compliments, complaints, concerns?

At Golden Petals Pre-school the managing director Reesa Nawas is the main individual in charge of any compliment, concerns, or complaints. If you have a compliment, we would be happy to have it in writing. We then can share this feedback from you and mention it to parents/carers via notice boards, Tapestry, and Instagram. If you have a concern, we would like you to come forward and raise this concern. You will receive a concern form and parents/carers will need to fill it out and tell us what the concern is. We will work closely with parents/carers to make sure we handle this concern effectively. We will call parents/carers into the setting for a meeting and resolve this concern. If, you have a complaint, we will follow the settings complaint procedures to make sure the complaint is dealt with professionally. A complaints form will be given to the parent/carer and to discuss this matter. We then, will arrange for a meeting to take place immediately. In the meeting we will come to an agreement and solve the matter. If nothing is resolved, we would take this further and discuss privately what the next stage is. Such as, networking with another professional body.
